Granted the title of "Best Steak Restaurant" by the Victorian Restaurant and Catering Association in 2006, and being a finalist in 2007 and 2008, Mediterraneo Charcoal Grill and Wine Bar is indeed an exciting eatery amid the Bridport Street cafe-scape. The space doubles as a casual gallery, with abstract artwork adorning the walls adding a splash of modern style to the otherwise modest and delightfully rustic ambience.
Mediterraneo has earned its accolades with some of the best charcoal-grilled food Melbourne has to offer, from pasture-fed aged steaks and fresh seafood to an assortment of Mediterranean vegetable-based recipes. All of these are cooked on a custom-made mallee-root grill, which ingeniously allows most of the fat to drip away, rendering what could be a greasy meat-fest into healthy and tasty dishes, distinctively flavoured with natural wood smoke. After dinner, grab a glass of fine wine and escape from the steamy dining area to the back courtyard marquee, where cobblestones, wicker chairs and up-beat Spanish music evoke the atmosphere of a quaint European village.

Excellent choice for dinner or private function
We had a private function upstairs, which has recently been renovated (one of the photos is the room) and it was set up exactly as we asked, and looked beautiful. The staff were fantastic, and the food was excellent as always. We have been to Mediterraneo before, and have never been disappointed, with either the food, or the service, which is why we decided to have a joint 35th wedding anniversary/60th birthday there. And the outside courtyard is heated, and the atmospehere is brilliant for those that enjoy a cigarette!

My favourite place for a steak!
Definitely my favourite place when I have an urge for a juicy steak. Cooked as requested and never been disappointed. In comparison to Rockpool a better menu, pleasure to dine at, and more intimate service. Chooses any dish from the menu and you will not be disappointed. Try the courtyard on a summer evening. It really is intimate and romantic for that special night.

Restaurant was cramped. In fact it was impossible for the waitress to serve us, for the tables are not well proportioned. I asked for water and the waitress poured water into my wine glass. The atmosphere was loud with wait staff loitering around. I felt that the drinks were over priced for the presentation skills alone were very poor. Seriously how hard is it to layer a cocktail? The meal itself was alright.

Good find! - Fantastic steak, great service
I had never noticed this popular little place before and were pleased to be squeezed in without reservation. We were welcomed into the small restuarant with warm friendly enthusiasm. The service was very family like and made for a pleasant atmosphere. It has a strong seafood menu obviously with a Mediterranian theme. Not being a huge calamari fan... I have now been converted, here it was cooked to perfection. My partner had steak and has recommended it to pretty much everyone we have spoken to in the past few weeks. They apparantly have an outdoor courtyard which I would love to return to.

Some great food
Despite its small and snug layout, we found that other table's conversation didn't spill to ours. We ended up ordering the seafood and meat platters and although there was 5 of us, we only ordered for 4 - and it was more than enough for our table. The seafood grill was great, especially the tuna steaks while the meat platter was juicy and filled with a variety of meets. Topped off with some great service - even though the our waiter was a little nervous - but the owner/manager was exceptional. Ensuring that we were never out of wine and even sang happy birthday for our mother!
Friendly service, homely atmosphere and some fantastically good value meals.

For lovers of European cuisine and meat
Very good food - the mixed grill platters were fantastic. The service was professional - the restaurant was full, but we were still very well looked after. The design is very stylish, but cosy. We will definitely be back again and I would recommend it all my friends and colleagues.

Worth a try
Best t-bone steak ever! The meal was excellent, very good entrees, we had garlic prawns and scallop and my partner tried an amazing pork dish for main meal. We will definitely come back to have steak and other dishes. We read a review in a newspaper, thought it sounded good but didn't go to try until we heard the place won the best steakhouse award. Well deserved. The prices were very reasonable and the waitresses were very helpful. I would recommend it to every one.
