The opening of this latest branch of Mecca Espresso signals a coming of age, of sorts, for the coffee couture brand. Mecca's previous retail outlets are small by anyone's standard, and yet they manage to produce some of the best coffee in Sydney. Now, with this spacious new venue slightly removed from the CBD, there's no telling what owner Paul Geshos and his crew will be able to achieve.
Entering Mecca Ultimo, it's immediately obvious that this isn't your run-of-the-mill cafe - even one with the Mecca pedigree. Stainless steel benchtops at the coffee stations (there are several) provide a nice counterpoint to the reclaimed wooden sleeper benches and exposed brick walls that make up the overriding industrial-chic motif of the seating area, while the back left corner of the spacious cafe is reserved for cupping sessions and coffee lab demonstrations.
On the drinks front, there is the usual third-wave gadgetry that has become synonymous with quality coffee: cold drip, siphon, pour-over, Clover and AeroPress all get a look-in. However, it's the food side of things that has Mecca III really upping its game. Expect gourmet sandwiches and salads that are at least the equal of the unerringly good coffee being produced here.
