Whoever said wine doesn't go with curry had clearly never dined at the multi-award-winning Maya Indian Restaurant on Freo's Market Street. Owner/chef Gurps Bagga has hand-picked a selection of WA wines, from whites with citrus and lime to cleanse the palate, to robust reds for spicier dishes. They work superbly with his innovative mod-Indian dishes. Each time he visits his family in India, he finds inspiration and returns to his kitchen with fresh ideas. His chilli whiting fillet; tandoori-style free-range Mount Barker chicken and hot Tawa scallops with tomato and mustard oil chutney are fine examples of his culinary ingenuity. However, the house specialty goat dish, made with top quality meat from a local Italian butcher, remains the firm favourite among his growing group of regulars. In 2003, he extended the heritage-listed property to incorporate three small, contemporary dining rooms and a bar, all boasting ornate high ceilings and exquisite examples of his wife's modern Indian-style fabric, clothing and jewellery designs. Not surprisingly, it's extremely popular with locals and visitors alike, so even with the extra space it's wise to make a reservation at weekends.

Great find!
We happened across Maya accidently on a Tuesday night, just wandering Freo looking for a restaurant. The fact that Maya was busy on a Tuesday was what drew us in. We had the fish doi and dahl with poppadums on the side. Amazing food. The curry was the best fish curry I have ever had. Often the fish in a curry is masked by a pungent sauce, but this was perfectly balanced, allowing the beautiful soft flesh and flavours of the barramundi to shine through. Lovely service- efficient and unobtrusive. Thankyou Maya- we will be back!!!

A little disappointing
My finace and I dined at Maya for dinner last Sunday night. We were put on a table along the wall, so close to the tables on either side of us that we could hear everyone's conversations and they could hear ours! Made us feel a little uncomfortable and unable to relax. The starters were lovely (papadums with yoghurt sauce and onion sauce), and then my partner's main came out. I watched him eat the whole thing before my main came out. I had chicken korma - it was pretty bland and not flavoursome, which was a little disappointing. Unfortunately probably wouldn't come back to this restaurant.

Great food and great service!
I went to this cosy little restaurant to celebrate my hubby's b'day with my parents as well. For all four meals including beers and a Jack Daniels, it came only to just over a hundred dollars. We all LOVED the food. I would definitely reccomend the palak paneer (spinach and baked ricotta, sooo creamy). The service was impeccable! The best food and service I have ever had anywhere for sure. I definitely would reccomend this restaurant to anyone, even if yor not a great lover of Indian food, it will definitely exite your taste buds!
