Maximilian's

The menu in this charming restaurant features Maximilian Hruska's own label wines and beef from his holdings, which complement the European-influenced menu. On any day of the week you can drop in for a wine tasting, but to get the full experience a visit to the restaurant from Thursday to Sunday holds many an indulgent pleasure to tickle a taste bud or two. Let the beef do the talking on the famous Chateaubriand platter for two, with peppered beef fillet accompanied by crouton, mushroom and asparagus with Bearnaise sauce. A log fire keeps the restaurant warm in cooler months, or the country air can be soaked up in the luscious patio area. More adventurous epicureans can hop onto a helicopter for a luncheon flight to remember.

A Cut Above The Rest
Absolutely my favourite restaurant of all time. The food is always fantastic (I had the pepper steak for mains and it was cooked to perfection), the service is second to none (even on what i assume is the busiest day of the year, valentines day) and it has a great atmosphere. It's so disappointing that I can only go once or twice a year considering the price, but it's worth every cent. Amazing!

Stunning - we'll be back!!!
My husband and I haven't been to Max's for a few years and wanted somewhere to celebrate our wedding anniversary. What a treat!

If you haven't been there before, it takes a bit over twenty minutes to get there from Adelaide but it is a very simple drive up the SE freeway. The restaurant is a converted farm house set on a hill in the middle of a vineyard. It is, without question, the most idyllic setting in the Adelaide hills.

We arrived early to take advantage of the wine tasting (which my husband especially enjoys) and found the young lady at cellar door (Amanda) to be most helpful and knowledgable. If you buy wine on the day you're dining there, you get an additional discount.

We were seated on the converted verandah area and enjoyed the stunning panoramic views over the vineyards and lake. The wine list is enormous and abundant in back vintages of some amazing wines. My husband commented that he had never seen as much Burgundy on a wine list! Both the food and the service were as good if not better than we had remembered. Apparently there is a new menu coming out with all of the "old favourites" and some more modern dishes to complement them which sounds exciting. We are booking in again in late October to try them out so watch this space!

To set the record straight
It just so happens that I was the waiter on the evening reviewed below. I have been a professional waiter and barman for 17 years. Max's serves are among the most generous of the fine dining restaurants I have worked in.
The Limestraw party was given their own lovely room with a large round table and an open fire. From a service perspective there was very little I could do as everyone seemed afraid to order food or drinks. Clearly they did not dine out very often. The wine was consumed and no more was ordered, hence I visited the table to top up water glasses. A couple of the party ordered entree hence the majority had a very long wait until main course arrived. They ordered enough side dishes for 4 people to share between 10.
I would have gladly provided more sides if asked, if the cake was not big enough I could have had it served with fresh fruit and ice cream without delay... if asked.
At no time did anyone indicate there was a problem. My point is that without dialogue or ordering it is very hard to provide good food and beverage service.

Wonderful
I found my experience to be fantastic here. My husband and my husband's family have been eating at Max's for years. The food is superb and the service was great. This experience was for my brother in law's 18th birthday and I found nothing to comlain about at all. The selection of wine was amazing and our glasses were never empty. The chef himself came and had a chat to the table and made us feel very comfortable and at ease. Wonderful atmosphere with beautiful views and amazing interior!

Eat before you go!
It was supposed to be a special occasion for my son's 50th birthday with a group of 10 including friends and family, booked and deposit paid 3 months in advance. It was the most embarrassing meal of my life! Service was shocking, choice of menu was limited and portions of food were embarrassing, presentation non existant! A birthday cake for 10 people supposed to be a blackforest cake charged at $120. It was the size of a cup cake so the serving for each person required magnifying glasses to find. Two bottles of wine were consumed and one glass of spirit. The bill was $1,000. Each person only had two courses. My daughter and I went without vegetables so there was enought for everyone.
