Max Cafe Bar & Restaurant

With rows of shallow arched alcoves lining the walls, Max Cafe has an almost church-like feeling on first entering. However on closer inspection, rather than stained-glass windows, the alcoves are filled with abstract artworks that are anything but holy. Similarly, while the menu is not unashamedly wicked, neither is it unnecessarily virtuous. There are plenty of rich pasta dishes, decadent Italian mains and light meals such as the grilled prawns with a bloody mary dressing. To top off the experience, the fully licensed bar stocks plenty of alcoholic accompaniments.

What a fabulous place
We ate here for dinner mid week during our stay in Melb and were so impressed that we bought 19 friends and family back on the Saturday and were not dissapointed. The staff are so friendly and no matter how busy the place got you never had to wait long for anything in fact they really went out of their way to make our night enjoyable. The food was lovely and the prices very reasonable. Everyone had a great night and when in Melb next we will definatley dine there again

Not happy
I took my mother to this venue for dinner this evening. We ordered a bottle of wine and bread and oil for appetizer. Mum had a Cajun salad for mains which she mostly enjoyed. She was however disappointed by the globs of minced chili paste drizzled over the plate. I ordered the seafood paella. The flavour was fine, the seafood was scarce as was the chicken (none) and chorizo (none). It was the rice that disappointed me. It was overcooked and pasty. I'm a chef and while I know things can go wrong, I think the person preparing this meal should have called the meal back rather than serve it. When I expressed my disappointment, genuinely, to the wait staff it was treated dismissively with a giggle.

Laneway delights
Very good restaurant in my books. The menu is quite decent with something for everyone, somewhat standard yet fresh and well prepared.

The service is pretty good, with no troubles or hassles and punctual attendance. Waiters were nice and had some character to them.

Atmosphere is probably where this restaurant shines, aside from the amazing chocolate pudding that makes your jaw drop. The guitarist sitting opposite the restaurant is very good and plays beautiful tunes that are sure to be recognized and have a classy, simple yet admirable sound. The restaurant is always busy outside and very lively, so you never feel awkward.

Overall, a great restaurant, which I will be back to.

Awesome
You absolutely must try this restaurant it is the best - especially the chocolate pudding it is to die for... trust me!!!

The ambience was great, it was a nice touch to have a solo guitar player singing a few well known singalong hits just topped off a perfect meal and a perfect evening. The quality of the food was unforgettable the chefs and the staff do an amazing job here. Well done - I'll be back again.
