Matsuya Japanese Restaurant

There's nothing pretentious about Matsuya, it's a great value little restaurant that serves satisfying meals. Tuck into a serve of chilli mussel rolls for some lip-smacking action, or grab a steak Japanese style: it's an eye fillet with a sauce of orange, soy, apple and rice wine. Bento boxes and daily specials are a big part of the menu. This is one of the few cheap Japanese restaurants that Melbourne offers, and as such represents good value for money. It's often very busy - so don't come expecting to get in and out quickly.

Well worth a visit
I've been meaning to visit for a few years now, and tonight was finally my chance. Being vegetarian; I was delighted to find that they have an exclusively vegetarian menu - but you have to ask for it. I tried the vegetarian curried vegetables and the nigiri + other styles sushi platter (a lovely assortment just perfect for me) while my non-vegetarian companion also tried the (pork and cabbage gyosa). The curry was the best I've had in Melbourne; including the standard carrot and potatoes, but also adding beans, mushrooms and something I think was pickled capsicum. We both loved every mouthful.

The chef's special, sushi and sashimi on a boat, was delivered to a nearby table and looked stunning, the place was packed until well into the evening, and everyone seemed to be enjoying their meal. I will definitely return.

Worst Japanese food I've had in a while
The ambiance is pretty standard of a cheap Japanese restaurant. Rather overwhelming display of the good luck charm clawing pussy atop the sushi bar. I thought the food was rather overpriced for the quality, andserving sizes. Sure the sushi portions are large but it's a tiny piece of fish wrapped in layers of over cooked rice. The Salmon Sashimi is usually a highlight but in this case was just the light at the end of a very long tunnel.
Starters were some bland tasting gyoza, far too much cabbage in the large sized dumplings. Also a beef tataki which was rather bland as well - again what is with the cabbage!??
Next came some large size sushi rolls sliced into nice sized portions but contained far too much rice. The fish could hardly be considered fresh in fact I dare say had been over handled. Possibly by a bored looking sushi chef lacking any passion or urgency to get his food out. The Chilli Salmon was bearable thanks to the spicy mayonnaise, the Matsuya roll contained some measly slices of tuna. Unagi Sushi was considerably better though nothing special. I would say the numerous sushi train restaurants around the city could have done better. Finally the Sashimi a basic selection of salmon, maguro, octopus and white fish. The salmon was really nice, good thickness of some slices (but not consistent) The maguro again was a let down, the octopus overcooked and the white fish not too bad.
Overall a disappointing experience. Would definitely not go back.

Great Japanese!
Very very tasty, cheap, fast, good service. Try crumbed pork, and all dumplings and sushi is delicious!

Good Jap
Love the "trainee" badge of some of the staff. At least they admit it. Food always (well 9.8 times out of 10) fresh, and well prepared. Increasingly busy, so book. Can't go past the House Special Boat combo sushi sashimi.

Matsuya - good cheap feed
The food was very tasty and flavoursome. The service is rather amateurish. The ambience is great, the staff don't bust your chops when you want to eat, and the design is great, too. However, a big letdown is the overwhelming smell of oil when you walk in. Recommended.
