At the Brunswick end of Lygon Street normally associated with Middle Eastern cuisine, Matsumoto serves up traditional Japanese dishes to a loyal clientele of locals and those to whom its reputation has spread. The dishes are reasonably priced and the menu is extensive, covering all manner of Japanese specialties from sushi, soups and seafood teppanyaki to noodles and hot pot specialties cooked at the table, as well as plenty of vegetarian options. It has a clean and casual ambience, with polished furniture and an open kitchen/sushi bar, but it is always busy at dinner time, so be prepared to sit back and enjoy a complimentary fragrant tea while you wait.

ill be back
We went to Matsumoto for a friends birthday, couldnt complain about the food, everything was perfect. One of the waitors was obviously new and walked right up to the birthday boy and asked how many candles he would like on his birthday cake!! It was a good laugh. A friend who had not tried Japanese absoloutly loved it so overall it was a great night. Id recomend this resturant to friends/family.

family friendly Japanese
We love Matsumoto, partly because we love Japanese food, partly because it's local, partly because it's not too expensive, but also because it's cheerful and family friendly. It's not a romantic venue with dim lighting, but it's great service and good food, well priced. Matsumoto seats a lot of people, but it's usually the busiest restaurant in the area. It's like a Japanese bistro.
We usually order gyoza (dumplings), okonomiyaki (cabbage and prawn pancake), nasu dengaku (eggplant), tonkatsu (pork schnitzel), which are all fabulous. We also love the beef tataki although raw beef and egg aren't everyone's cup of tea, but this is a great way to try it. It's delicate and gently sweet and light. I'm looking forward to our next visit!

Good value & tasty
We had some friends recommend this place and were very happy with it. The food was tasty, plentiful and freshly cooked. Some of the dishes are very rich and we had plenty left over. The service was prompt and friendly. About the only things I didn't like was the tables are quite tightly packed in (not ideal for romantic dinners), the acoustics aren't great (it can get quite noisy), and the interior colours are a bit bright. We will definitely be going back.

Loved it!
We took our 3 kids there for dinner and not only did we find the food delicious (and I am very fussy about my Sushi) but the staff were incredibly patient and great with our 3 small children. Will be back there regularly.

Disappointed
I love sashimi and sushi a lot and have them frequently. I've read some positive reviews about this place being yummy and since it's not too far away we decided to try.
My dining companion and I ordered the sushi and sashimi set for 2, the wafu steak and the crumbed oysters. The latter two dishes were alright (not fantastic).
The sushi and sashimi arrived after quite a bit of a wait and what can I say? I was very disappointed. They should not be serving sushi if they can't even get the rice right. It was dry and unappetising. The sashimi was okay, but most of the other sushi were quite warm. They tasted like they've been sitting at room temperature for hours. To be blatantly honest, I'd rather eat sushi rolls at those take away sushi bars. I don't think I will return.

Not the best, but one of our favourites
We've been to Matsumoto a number of times. It's probably not authentic, but the food is generally good. My favourite is the Wafu Steak. I've tried this dish in a bunch of other restaurants in Melbourne & Sydney but the Matsumoto version is still my favourite.
Service is generally good.
Atmosphere is nothing special. The place is very noisy.
However, overall we like the place and regularly go back for the food.

Not spectacular
It may just be me. Having been to Japan a few times and been fortunate enough to experience some truly sensational Japanese foods I am often let down at Japanese restaurants. This was no different. The food just didnt quite get there. Its almost something indefinable. Maybe its not as fresh (but then in Japan there are dishes where you can be served a fish that is still blinking at you even though it has been filleted) or perhaps its that the dishes are not quite as authentic as I was expecting. Having said this my dinner friend who has not been to Japan loved her meal.
