Masani

Another great Italian restaurant in Melbourne, Masani often offers something really special such as white asparagus with truffles or free range citrus-flavoured duckling with caramelised eshalots and grappa. The dining room is warm and inviting with Roman columns and leather banquettes. All pastas are made on the premises.

Disappointing service
After hearing my parents' rave reviews (who started dining at this restaurant in the mid-eighties), I was so keen to try Masani. Unfortunately, Masani was greatly let down by its staff and their attitude. The Maitre d' visited every table except ours to explain the blackboard specials when a table who had been seated after us had their entree, we thought it might be best to ask for an explanation (the staff seemed quite put out to be asked). It seemed that you had to know the staff or be an exceptionally regular customer to get even the slightest bit of attention/acknowledgment.

I also found it quite embarrasing after having ordered a carpaccio for entree (which was explained in black and white in the menu as 'raw meat' and which I have eaten on many occassions) to have the waitress return to the table to make sure we understood that the dish was raw. All in all it was an exceptionally disappointing experience. I felt like I was not good enough to be there and that we were receiving this treatment because we were not perceived to be 'cultured' enought to dine there (even though they were happy to take our $200 for the bill)! It was topped off by the chef coming out towards the end of service and again visiting every table but ours to see how their meals were.

Whilst the food was good and we did not mind the long wait, I would definitely not recommend this restaurant to anyone who isn't on first name basis with the Maitre d'.

Promising start, fell flat on its face!
Pleasantly surprised with the fireplaces and the layout, unfortunately the back room was too noisy - maybe due to the high ceilings. Alarm bells started ringing when the service was slow and the staff seemed young and naive. Menu sounds great, but in reality the food is disappointing, overpriced and occasionally cold. The veal entree soup was bland - beef stock cup of tea - and the lobster pasta dish lacked lobster except for a leg! We decided to leave but then were surprised when they tried to charge us for a dessert we didn't have. They argued their case but finally the manager agreed that we shouldn't have to pay for something not received.
