If you're a doner devotee of the kebab kind, then Marmara Turkish Restaurant is one of Melbourne's go-to spots for a traditional Turkish treat. Named after the Sea of Marmara in Turkey, this popular family-owned restaurant has stood strong in Windsor since it opened back in 1980 - yes, 1980. The flavours go back even further in time, taking diners' palates to Istanbul and beyond. Naturally, the key dishes are the Iskender kebabs, the shish kebabs, and those much-loved beauties, the doner kebabs.

Truly honestly Turkish
We four, two adults and two teen boys, tried the Marmara on a Saturday night to reminisce about travelling in Turkey. We were not disappointed. The setting, old style plain tables and furnishings, all the dips and doner spit in the window fitted perfectly. We got there at 7:15, to a virtually empty restaurant but by 7:30 it was full. A friendly waiter had the time to add some humour, a smile and personal attention even though on the run. We had 3 mains to share -a round crisp kofte pide,a very generous doner and a juicy iskender kebab served a bit differently in a ceramic dish. After a mixed plate of starters, and extra real Turkish pide bread, it was more than enough. The adults also enjoyed a glass of the more upmarket and quality Efes Sari Zeybek raki(oak wooded; it was very nice to see it offered on the menu. Dont go for a luxury dining experience, just for a good honest enjoyment of company over good food.Very Turkish! Biggest table was perhaps for 6 so best for small groups and couples.
