Slow, expensive and unimpressive food
We ordered entrees, mains and desert. We live in Melbourne and eat food from Mcdonalds to Crown exclusive dining and understand that a $10 meal isn't going to be the same as a $40 meal. Marks is expensive. But the food isn't exciting - a pub meal has more effort put in.
Marks had speedy attentive service staff. Unfortantely the food wasn't as quick - after a 45+ minute wait after we finished eating our entree's we finally received so-so mains (steak/pork). It wasn't so much that they tasted bad, but they were just unexciting and considering how expensive they were $32 Pork and $36 for steak, very bland. No vegies or chips or anything much with the meat for that price. "Extra vegies" that we ordered were just steamed vegies - no attempts at doing anything with them. This would be ok if it was fast and cheaper, but not for the time it took or the cost. The place was not busy (around 5 tables) so it should not have taken as long as it did. Desserts were nice. Staff friendly.

Disappointed
After being a frequent visitor to Lorne over the last 10 years, I finally decided, accompanied by three others, that I would frequent what is probably Lorne's priciest restaurant - Marks.
Main Course - Pasta with Mushroom sauce
The pasta was OK, al dente. The sauce was insipid. There was little or no taste to it. Even the parsley did not lift the taste which was watery and bland.
Sides, vegetables or salad. Not included and they should be at those prices.
The green salad, which I had to order separately, was a joke - just half a dozen roughly torn but very large cos lettuce leaves untossed in a bowl with a very tart wine vinegar and no discernable oil at all.
How much does it cost to use a good balsamic vinegar from the supermarket and a good virgin olive oil?
Overall, I felt let down and insulted.
The chirpy, polite waitress was the most pleasant part of my dining experience.
