Markov Place

Perhaps it's the dark red and chocolate decor or the secluded bunker-style setting, but something about Markov Place feels a little like it could be the meeting space for historic Spanish revolutionaries. Within its cavernous space, this secluded eatery blends bold Spanish posters and a spicy mod-tapas cuisine to evoke European backstreet wine bars. Soft leather stools line the separate bar area for those just simply stopping by for a drink, while communal tables, spacious booth seating and natural lighting from large glass doors complete the welcoming dining room.

The menu of bar snack-style share plates changes almost weekly, featuring dishes such as wagyu beef; or stuffed zucchini flowers with queso de cabra, chilli, mint and caper berries. Main courses range from Cajun roast lamb to seafood paella with saffron, chorizo, peas and asparagus; paired with a decent wine list of more than 50 Australian, French and, of course, Spanish varieties.

Fantastic food!
Great atmopshere/ambience in the restaurant - we like to look of the new bar.

With such a range of tasy delights on the menu we were finding it hard to make choices! We settled on 2 starters to share (squid excellent), and then also shared a main course of the pearl barley risotto - ahhhh - heaven - that dish is amazing. The chocolate pudding was also fantastic. Great service - though some more knowledge on the wines from the staff would be good. Thanks for a great meal! Keep up the good work.

Heavenly food
Went here early Saturday night and was able to secure one of the last not reserved tables. Was placed at a very small table with one backless stool but the exceptional service and ambience certainly made up for these minor inconveniences. On to the important stuff though, and I was very impressed with the lengthy and interesting beer list from around the world. As for the food, I ordered the scallop with anchovy butter special and was blown away with the flavours. Friend ordered the mussels from the al a carte menu and he just adored them although I would recommend a deeper bowl to house said moules as 1 ended up on the floor. Would highly recommend this place for something different in Carlton but remember to book as this place is smoking.

Carlton's hidden secret
This urban bar is well hidden and super cool. It looks as it could belong in one of the city's laneways or underground in Berlin, but without the crowdy rowdy lot normally accompanying such thing. The food is gourmet and quite fancy (not your average pub meal) and the atmosphere unexpectantly enjoyable and pleasant. It seemed weird that on a Friday night straight after work such a bar was moderately quiet. There was lots of tables reserved though, so possibly it was due to get fuller later.
Will definitely be returning to sample some more of the exciting menu.
