Maris

Having opened in 2005 as the brainchild of chef Patrick Craig and wife Gabby, Maris has steadily built a reputation for its wonderfully contemporary menu (with a focus on modern Italian), quirky sophistication and surprising value for money. Maris is brimming with old-world charm and tinged with a rebellious eclecticism, from the rare knickknacks on the mantelpiece to the antique rocking horse in the window. Marble tabletops and unpolished wooden chairs serve to highlight Maris's charming oddness, as does the menu's pleasing mix of Mediterranean and Australian dishes, including more than one offal offering.

Almost great
The service is fantastic. The food was good, perhaps a tweak here or there would make it great. The atmosphere was odd though, the tables are close apart and somehow when you walk in it feels almost like a fish and chip shop...
But we would return.

Disappointed
We have had a couple of great experiences at Maris but this time it was just so disappointing. It started off very well with the bread and olive dip and little complimentary salad and we thought we were in for another great culinary experience. We ordered the lobstor soup and the prawn entree which were both quite ordinary.. We then had the crab risotto - well what a disappointment. To start off with it was bright green with no visible crab meat and a couple of tiny artichoke leaves. It was not exciting or even very tasty. The coffee was watered down and quite ordinary as well. It's such a pity as we have enjoyed the restaurant in the past and now won't be recommending it to anyone.

Absolutely stunning
Can't recommend this place highly enough. What a hidden treasure. I'll be making this a favourite haunt in no time. Amazing food and loved the BYO.

Great night with friends
As a small group of friends, we don't often get the chance to eat out so we hoped our dinner at Maris was going to be worthwhile. It was fantastic with excellent food. Delicious bread to start, beautifully presented mains that all tasted superb. We sat in the middle of the restaurant and whilst it is a small space, didn't feel cramped. With a big table booking it was noisy as there are little soft furnishings but it reminds me of so many of the little bistros in Europe. We stayed late (10.45pm) with no hassle from the staff for us to leave.

Disappointing on all fronts. Food of poor quality was served on cold plates. As well, there can be no excuse for seating customers in a small noisy room next to the kitchen, impatiently hassling them for their orders (and again for desserts).

Great food, great service, absolute quality for your money
Well I'd like to start off and say my friends and I all had a great night out at Maris in Malvern. This is a great small restaurant and I highly recommend it to anybody that can make it out there. We went on a Thursday night and the restaurant was full. To start I had a delicious "hot and sour" Thai soup that was full of fresh herbs, mushrooms and marron, my favourite for the night, to follow I had ocean trout that had been poached in squid ink, braised fennel, king brown mushrooms and a nettle foam. Really quite delicious, I was really impressed. For dessert I tried chocolate cake with poached pears, caramel foam and lavander! I loved it but was very very full! The best thing was I thought we all got very good value for our money. I love eating out all the time and I'll be back to Maris for sure very soon.

Dissappointed and short changed
What was to be a celebratory dinner turned into a nightmare! Food was good and tasty, but when it came to paying the bill, a lack of attention to detail led to a considerable overcharging saga. A lack of knowledge, empathy and efficiency means we would say that it is not worth the hassle.
