Marios

This Fitzroy institution wrote the book on no-fuss, great-value cafes. The emphasis is on Italian cuisine, with 10 pasta dishes on offer and an antipasto selection overflowing with fresh and pickled goodies. The grungy decor is offset by crisp white tablecloths and traditionally attired waiters, who are casual yet professional. Marios serves breakfast all day and the espresso machine works overtime.

Great coffee, great pasta
On a weekend jaunt to Melbourne my partner and I visited the wonderful Polyester bookstore in Brunswick street and soon after were in need of sustenance. I'd read about Mario's in our Melbourne travel guide, so we dediced to take the risk.

The place was buzzing at noon, but we managed to secure an inside table. My lattes were fine quality, and the pasta was excellent. My partner's breakfast fritta, a special, was also excellent. They also offered a good range of wine by the glass which we sampled before we left.

The service was fine - our first waitress was very attentive and our drinks and meals were delivered promptly. It was easy to catch the waiter's eye when we wanted new drinks, despite the room being at near capacity. Overall, a fine venue, with an eclectic mix of furniture, and a good selection of food and drink are reasonable prices.

Relaxed Brunch
Was there on a Wendesday with friends for brunch, sat outside. Food was tasty, we ordered a few egg dishes and the felafel balls with salad, and came out in good time. Staff were courteous without being pretentious. Would go back.

Terrible terrible terrible
I have never been to such a place in my life.
The fact that they didn't have skim milk was one thing, but they were rude! The food was nothing like what was promised on the menu, and the staff were intolerable.
I will never return, and I will pass on this awful experience to anyone I meet.

Looks can be deceiving
Arriving early for breakfast following a night shift, all I got from the waiter was attitude. All I wanted was a quiet after-work beer and some breakfast. The food was ok but not spectacular (had better eggs salmon in other places). What really got me though was the waiter telling me not to drink because '(I) was driving' (not thinking I'd parked the car and walked down).

Definitely not going back. Though big ups for the other waiter who saw what was happening and made a big effort to make my last few minutes in there pleasant.

Excellent
I have been a regular patron of Mario's since they opened 20 odd years ago. I have always found the service to be reliable, professional and friendly. The food has never disappointed and the atmosphere pumping. It is by far the best cafe in Melbourne. I travel across town to eat there at least once per week. Highly recommend it.

Being, Not Trying
I guess when your reputation precedes you (ie) that you are stuffy, pretentious and only for the cafe-society set, Mario's can be an overbearing possibility to engage. Nonetheless, when we waited for an early evening lapse in the crowd and barged through that familiar front door, any anxieties that we might have experienced were quickly allayed. Mario's is a template in how to cook right, serve right and create an atmosphere that is just right. And the coffee of itself is worth the plane trip down from Sydney.

I have never experienced such rude service from waiters before in my life. My Italian father in law, delighted by the surrounds, was talked down to from these arrogant waiters, and my mother in law was laughed at when requesting a flat white. I would certainly never recommend it and in fact have advised against it to friends who were intending to go there. Great Italian cuisine is not hard to find, especially so close to Lygon St.

Dissapointing
Casual, old world, Italian restaurant, with so-so meals and desserts which didn't quite cut it. A bit pricy for quality. Doesn't take credit cards.

I have no idea why this place is so popular. The coffee was the only decent thing to appear. The staff were offhand, we received meagre portions of of pretty average lasagne. We ordered two separate Greek salads, only to have a salad lumped onto one plate to "share". We thought they were kidding at first. I haven't been back.

What's with the attitude?
Mario's, a Melbourne institution! Located on Brunswick St, this "famous" cafe of Melbourne offered my international guest and myself a lesson in how NOT to run a cafe.

I can live with the fact that neither Decaf nor Skinny Milk are on the menu - mainly because I don't order either of these options ... but the insulting way in which staff treat patrons is really quite remarkable.

To order a flat white - and be told, you mean a latte - was both insulting and rude.

The night didn't get any better from there, some rather poorly executed desserts (including one almost lumpy creme brule) topped things off.

When we asked for a 'couple' of glasses of water (there were 3 of us present) and only two glasses appeared was both foolish and rather annoying.

All in all a disappointing supper from a Melbourne institution!

Not for me
No skim milk available, dishes came out with ingredients not mentioned on the menu (then great offence taken when they were asked to be removed - some people have allergies you know), no bookings, no credit cards. Food was fine, no complaints (other than extra ingredients) but it was all just too hard.
