Fantastic Lunch
It'd been some years since I'd been here, not for any other reason than some people don't like travelling far from Civic for lunch. The day we went, there was only one guy working (the chef) so he took our orders, cooked and delivered the food. At the time of this review, Marinetti had a $22.90 lunch special, where you could choose any entree AND any main. For entree, I opted for the chicken livers with mushrooms, which were very good but could have done with some bread to soak up some of the sauce (I was fortunate that one of my lunchtime companions had some bread to share so I was able to). For mains, I went for the balsamic glazed lamb shanks (plural, both of which were huge) with veg, and the meat just flaked off the bones. The service was a bit slow (see above), but we were happy to engage with each other and consume some wine while waiting (BYO, and no corkage, which is a bit of a novelty these days when a number of restaurants pretty much charge this at the price of a bottle). The atmosphere is a little lacking, but this feels more like a little Italian restaurant from the old country. I would highly recommend a slow-lunch at Marinettis, and I'll be back soon.

Had great expectations, was very disappointed. Food was ordinary, vegetables cold, meat lukewarm although correct in rarity (asked for rare). Service, if you could call it that, consisted of one person for 38 patrons. The waiter was brusque and intimidating, leaned across people so you had to lean back to accomodate him, slid a plate halfway across a table, etc. etc. On the plus side, everything was delivered in the correct order. We were told that chicken breasts, liver or calamari were not available and this on a saturday night at 7.45pm. One wonders what is available on Sunday night? Two speakers on top of wall but no music, conversation was drowned out by airc-conditioning machinery, when on. Those Italian staples like garlic bread, bruscetta, cheeses, were nowhere to be seen and dessert was topped off with store-bought caramel custard and bad-tasting coffee.
All in all, ordinary food at albeit good prices, not to be visited again.
