Marinetti

Marinetti's longevity is easily explained by a glance at the menu; pleasingly old-fashioned Italian meals are offered at outrageously generous prices. Chef and owner Roger Craig specialises in slow-cooked Italian-style meat, from tender lamb shanks with red wine and balsamic to the odd offal dish.

under new ownership
just returned after our first meal there since the place changed ownership some months ago. The dining area has been enlarged slightly to fit in more tables and the accoustics and aesthetics have improved considerably. The waiting staff has trebled to three and there is now a small bar with several barstools .The food is ok , nothing startling , the menu smaller and the younger members of our party were a tad upset to find no pizza on offer now. Previously it served ' true ' italian pizza. Pricewise , considering the cramped space and a few other minor irritations along with the size of the serves ( not generous )it would warrant several dollars less as the price of mains. Under the old ownership a main was often sufficient , now an entree is mandatory unless one has had a late lunch as one of our party. We will visit again however as it is the closest italian restuarant to home.

Fantastic Lunch
It'd been some years since I'd been here, not for any other reason than some people don't like travelling far from Civic for lunch. The day we went, there was only one guy working (the chef) so he took our orders, cooked and delivered the food. At the time of this review, Marinetti had a $22.90 lunch special, where you could choose any entree AND any main. For entree, I opted for the chicken livers with mushrooms, which were very good but could have done with some bread to soak up some of the sauce (I was fortunate that one of my lunchtime companions had some bread to share so I was able to). For mains, I went for the balsamic glazed lamb shanks (plural, both of which were huge) with veg, and the meat just flaked off the bones. The service was a bit slow (see above), but we were happy to engage with each other and consume some wine while waiting (BYO, and no corkage, which is a bit of a novelty these days when a number of restaurants pretty much charge this at the price of a bottle). The atmosphere is a little lacking, but this feels more like a little Italian restaurant from the old country. I would highly recommend a slow-lunch at Marinettis, and I'll be back soon.

Thoroughly enjoyed the meal
We had our staff christmas dinner - 10 people - and really enjoyed the food. From the Canneloni to the lamb shanks everyone loved what they ordered. The service was quick but not hurried and we quickly recieved water for the table and bread when we arrived. I would really recommend this place - the food great.

Had great expectations, was very disappointed. Food was ordinary, vegetables cold, meat lukewarm although correct in rarity (asked for rare). Service, if you could call it that, consisted of one person for 38 patrons. The waiter was brusque and intimidating, leaned across people so you had to lean back to accomodate him, slid a plate halfway across a table, etc. etc. On the plus side, everything was delivered in the correct order.
We were told that chicken breasts, liver or calamari were not available and this on a saturday night at 7.45pm. One wonders what is available on Sunday night?
Two speakers on top of wall but no music, conversation was drowned out by airc-conditioning machinery, when on.
Those Italian staples like garlic bread, bruscetta, cheeses, were nowhere to be seen and dessert was topped off with store-bought caramel custard and bad-tasting coffee.

All in all, ordinary food at albeit good prices, not to be visited again.

Delicious!
A little cramped and very noisy, Marinetti has a great atmosphere, but I wouldn't reccomend it for an intimate occasion.

I must admit though, the food was pretty amazing, especially the meat. I very highly recommend the lamb.
