Lover of authentic Korean food? You have to visit Mapo. The husband and wife team of Chung Jae and Sam Lee run this modern restaurant in the heart of busy Gouger Street. Try the dolsot bibimbap, a signature Korean dish consisting of a hot pot filled with marinated vegetables, egg and rice. The pot is presented to the diner, still steaming. Mix in your choice of meat, seafood or vegetarian delicacies to taste. As the pot continues to heat the food, the rice adds crunch to the meal. This restaurant is part of the dynamic new breed of outlets that uses the specials list to promote unique dishes, rather than a promotion for slow-selling food. Table service is efficient, if not that informative. The wine list favours commercial options, but the beer list offers a number of commercial Korean beers, along with domestic and premium alternatives. For a dining experience from the heart of Seoul, try Mapo.

Well Done
Four of us had a window table and enjoyed the friendly service, hearty meals and well presented tasty meals. We all had something different and would go back again. The decor and soft background music was ideal.Prices were fair and there is a nice feel about the place.

Perfect
Mapo is one of my three favourite restaurants in Adelaide. The food is delicious, good value and is extremely well presented, but unlike many other restaurants, doesn't cut corners on portion size to achieve their art. This place is cool, really cool. You must check it out.

Beware the coffee rib cut
It was a balmy winter's eve, and as fortune had it, I happened to notice the salt and pepper soft shelled crab special at East Taste cafe, right next door to our vict... *ahem* reviewee, Mapo. My friend and I were ushered to a nearby table, and were immediately struck by the lighting, quite dark, difficult to see, even. Nevertheless, our hopes had been raised by a friend who had espoused the virtues of their services. Blah blah blah... anyway, the point is..... The coffee ribs were, well, pretty crap. The chef had, in his illustrious capacity, ordained that the inferior cut of the pork belly that day should end up on my plate, a particularly sinewey and fatty cut of belly (and not that good subcutaneous kind of fat). I made it a few mouthfuls through, and to stop. I love soft, blubbery pork, my german heritage commands it, but this was just ridiculous. When you have to chomp through the sinew, you know it's time to leave. And I did. I walked out of their door, after flipping a few twentys down on the bar (I didnt even want to wait for change, which confused the floor staff, who thought I had tipped them), and straight into East Taste, where I ordered another fifty bucks worth of chinese takeaway, incuding their extra special soft shelled crabs. And they were great!
The waiter from Mapo, god bless his little soul, rushed out the door and bumped into me as I was leaving East Taste with a bagged-up bundle of takeaway in hand, only to apologise for the shitty ribs, and then he gave me back the $35 for the main. Quality!

Highly recommend
Had an informal mid-week dinner here and was impressed with the friendly, well informed and attentive service. Traditional dullsot dish was brilliant as was the salmon albeit a small portion. Will definitely return.
