Great food and service, just extreme corkage prices!
The food was really good at this place. We did feel pretty rushed here as the waiters take your food away the split second your finished, giving us the impression that wanted us in and out as soon as possible. Apart from that and ridiculously high corkage fees, the service, atmosphere and food is very good.

Wowwwww!!
Wow!!! I was introduced to this place a few months back by friends, and all I can say is awesome... It is that nice that it has now become a weekly ritual that we dine there either as a couple or with friends! The staff work like a family, they are the most welcoming and friendly ppl.... The food is reasonably priced and tastes divine, try the chilli beef, claypot prawns or peking duck...the best I've ever tasted....though you won't be disappointed with anything on the menu its all 100%. Also there is a good selection of the wine list and the most important thing is, they are all under very reasonable price.

A great place for great Chinese food
A great place for great Chinese food. Service cannot be faulted, waiters pull out your chairs and serve you your dishes to your plate. The space is amazing, in a traditional temple style building that makes the whole experience perfect. The best peking duck in the world!

Sorely misled by reviews - terrible time!
Went here for a birthday dinner with the family - 8 of us, and we booked over a week in advance. Food took forever to come out (almost two hours for the first plate to trickle out and by the time the last dish was served, it was well over three hours from our first order). Portions were tiny. Eight people had barely a bite each of each dish 0 and at 20-50 per dish, that's not saying much! Very expensive, and the ambience was daggy to say the least - murals were interesting, definitely not a traditional Chinese restaurant but the whole thing felt dated. Except for the man tou, everything was extremely mediocre or worse - and although the waitresses were nice enough, it was very difficult to catch their eye for water refills and we noticed a marked difference in their attitude towards us and the other tables. Whereas other tables had their Peking Duck painstakingly served in individual portions, we were shoved the duck and pancakes unceremoniously and made to serve ourselves - even though we ordered the same amount! We left hungry and dissatisfied and it was too late to go anywhere else. Meal came up to over AUD30 per person, we could have had a much better meal at any other Chinese restaurant in the city. We will not be coming back.

Something you must try
I have been going to Maos Chinese restaurant for the past 5 years. The food is outstanding and excellent value for the price. I have taken many friends there and all of them love it. Some recommendations: Salt & Pepper calamari, Sizzling beef, Crispy Skin Chicken, the homemade Spring Rolls are to die for. It is necessary to make a booking in advance, especially for a Friday or Saturday night.

Absolutely adore it for every reason
My boyfriend and I have been coming here for years and absolutely adore it for every reason. Before coming here my boyfriend was quite cautious of Chinese food but now loves it.

Every dish we have ever ordered has always been fresh and very tasty. I'm a huge fan of seafood and have tried every seafood dish offered. I would recommend the Claypot King Prawn and Ginger Scallop. My boyfriend loves the Hunan Style Pork and Peking Duck.

Best of the best
We have been going to Maos in for almost 4 years now, have been with family and friends, dine in and take away. Always fantastic service, and the food is amazing. True can sometimes wait for the food, but its well worth the wait and its because its busy.

I can't say anything negative. All the staff and management know us, and make us feel very welcome. I no longer live in the area, but still travel to go there for Chinese food as it's the best I have had. Definitely will continue going!

Highly recommend
Now here was a nice find. We ambled into the Mao's Chinese restaurant one Saturday night almost by accident. In fact we had passed this restaurant many times before we ever noticed it existed. Although not quite 6.30 pm the restaurant was already packed.
When the food began to arrive it was easy to see why this restaurant is so popular among the locals. It is of a standard well above your usual suburban Chinese fare. The service is always attentive and friendly too.
I recommend the hunan style pork and peking duck. Needless to say that we have become 'regulars' at this restaurant. I highly recommend Mao's

Bookings are essential
A group of five walked in off the street, no booking, on a Friday night with the restaurant extremely busy. We were warmly welcomed, seated promptly and pampered with exemplary service, mouth watering delicious food and a bill that didn't burn a hole in our pockets. Well worth a visit. We'll go back again.

Good Food & Good Service
We had a function here last week and it was absolutely awesome. The staff were so attentive and responsive to any of our requests. The food was excellent too. We had a tasting banquet which you can try all the popular food in the menu. The ambience was awesome, asian decor. It was on occasion to remember.

We'll recommend this place to our family & friends.

Beware
Picked this restaurant as it was in the gold section of the entertainment book.. were charged $12.00 a bottle corkage per bottle when your site said $6.00. Sure we were charged extra because we used 2 cards on the table for the bill when we rang back to check it was only $8.00 would never go again....

Overly priced, small servings
Our group was very disappointed with Mao's especially since it was in the Gold Pass section of The Entertainment Book. We received everything in small servings; two very basic menu items were not available; miniature teapot & cups for Jasmine tea, each cup provided only a small mouthful as if from a child's teaset; desserts at $10 each were very tiny portions. The presentation & taste/texture of the mango dessert was very ordinary, and way overpriced. Will not go back again.

Good Chinese food in Melbourne
Enjoyed the first experience at Mao's. Hunan cuisine with a bit of spice - the signature dish of chilli beef and the ginger shark bay scallop can't be missed. Nice atmosphere, good food and very friendly staff help me out for all I need.
