To get a good picture of this restaurant, you need to take all the stereotypes of Mexican food you've developed throughout the course of your life - the sickly nachos, cheesy burritos and greasy, hard-shelled tacos - and throw them all out the window. Anyone who has been to the motherland will understand me when I say this is traditional Mexican food in all its glory. The menu is a great representation of authentic freshness and flavour, as you would expect from head chef Jason Jones' years of working in Central American kitchens. The Mexican truffle (or corn smut) quesadilla is a must-try from a menu full of stand-outs.
The wine list is extensive enough to keep most people satisfied and the tequilas on offer have a great depth of flavour and variety (Anejos, Reposados and Blancos all covered). Best of all, bless them, there's not a lime wedge in a beer in sight.

I just don't get it
Maybe it just is because there are limited choices for mexican but it really doesnt deserve the hype. Boring fit-out and the food lacked punch also. I was expecting much more. Some interesting ingrediants but after being their twice I think they are wide off the mark.

Overrated Eats....
Dining at 'Mamasita' for the first time, I had high hopes and expectations for the urban eatery.
Unfortunately, I was sincerely disappointed for a number of reasons. Despite the online menu clearly stating all menu items are gluten free, I suffered sever illness this morning from the wheat tortillas served to us - it would appear that all menu items CAN be gluten free, but only upon request.
The food itself was, quite frankly, awful. Many of our dishes came out cold and were not to the standard you would expect from such a popular outlet.
The staff were lovely and helpful, however continuously made mistakes (the poor dears!), including filling my wine glass to the very brim (so I couldn't lift the glass from the table without it spilling all over me) and forgetting to give my credit card back to me post-payment.
The vibe and atmosphere is fantastic, though that certainly doesn't bring the overall standard to an appropriate level.

Great venue but food a little bit of a letdown
Having been to Mamasita six times now and tried most of the menu I'd have to say whilst it is good I certainly wouldn't call it 'authentic Mexican' food as some people seem to think it is. Yes it is different to what most Aussies know as Mexican and that is good but the food is very different to what I have had in Mexico, both north and south.
The best things on the menu are the Quesadillas and tostaditas and the corn on the cob is excellent. The tacos can be hit and miss, mostly miss from my experience.
Overall it is a great atmosphere and very good for a late night feed.

A-mah-zing
Mama Sita is a rare Melbourne restaurant that has spurned its "it" status. Trendy restaurants come and go in this city and too often proprietors and staff get giddy on self serving hype and fall into the trap of gloating over substandard food and treating the average punter like they re doing them a favour by letting them in.
Mama Sita, shocking as it is does not make either folly. It serves up honest yet flavoursome dishes sans the usual frou frou gastronomic pretence.
It is staffed by a group of good looking kids who are polite, attentive and know their product.
I am so over the Melbourne scene and really wanted to hate this place before I had even stepped in but it is truly amazing. 9 out 10 for me.

Authentic? Maybe not.
We were disappointed that this place didn't live up to its self-hyped authenticity. The tacos lacked key ingredients like cilantro. Having said that, still might give it another go in the future. The service was great.
