Housed in the Melbourne Building, Mama's Trattoria conjures up the feel of a traditional Italian restaurant with its variety of pasta staples and is packed out each weekend with diners enjoying a relaxing meal in the Canberra sunshine.
Alfresco tables sprawl out onto the pedestrian concourse, while inside the feel is warm and rustic, with simple wooden tables and chairs. The food is, as the name suggests, just as Mama would cook it: hearty meals that warm the belly and the soul.

Mama's experience
After reading reviews, i expected a small cosy atmosphere, kind of like "mama's kitchen" type feel. They have upgraded and have gone for a fine dining atmosphere now, but the food did not match this "image".
Dinning with a large group today, the pasta serves were generous and from feedback from friends were either very bland on a chilli dish or over seasoned with salt. The focaccias were small, and the main style meals were, while ok, were not filling. The small veal steak was battered, like a scollopini should be i guess, but drowned in cream sauce with 3 prawns and a few vegies. I left hungry and slightly annoyed $26 later.
The service also did not match the fine dining atmosphere, with plates being removed before people had finished, cutlery set on the wrong side, water sat un-refilled, did not ask if we would like dessert of coffee and very importantly, even though ordered well in advance, the food was not served together, and friends lunches were cold whilst waiting politely.

My favourite little Italian restaurant
This place will always be a sentimental favourite for me, having been taken here on a first date (still with that guy). I have so many problems when I show up at Mama's - what to choose! Everything sounds so tempting. I love just about every pasta dish (order entree size at lunch, servings are generous). Pene al pepe is a highlight, as is linguini gamberi and linguine piccante. Freshly squeezed orange juice is also wonderful. Oh, and the coffee. Oh, and you've GOT to try the chocolate gelato - a huge scoop served in a parfait glass for just $2.50 and it's died-and-went-to-heaven good.

Fabulous service and great food
Every time I eat here I am blown away by the "absolutely nothing is too much trouble" and "you only have to ask" service provided in this traditional Italian eatery. It's so nice to have lovely fresh alternatives to pasta offered on an Italian menu as Italian food is so much more than pizza and pasta. Highly recommended for casual dining day or night. Only criticism would be the vegies are undercooked (have only been shown the cooker) but I know if I remember to ask for them to be cooked a little more - I will get it and it will be no trouble!
