Mamak Village

The Malaysian hawker food craze in Sydney has hit fever pitch and doesn't look like stopping any time soon. As if to prove the point, this new mamak-style eatery has swung open its doors in Glebe.

The first thing that comes to mind when most Sydneysiders hear the name Mamak Village is 'spin-off'. But despite the similar name and cuisine, this place isn't related to the roti queue-inducing Haymarket diner; it is its own beast with its own quirks and idiosyncrasies.

There are similarities, of course. There's the theatricality of roti-making on display toward the front of the restaurant and the somewhat extraneous cold Milo on the beverage menu. But Mamak Village is no copycat. To this point, Malaysian hawker cuisine in this country has been defined by the roti. Now it's time for the nasi lemak to take its rightful place up there as well, and Mamak Village is certainly doing its part with the laudable version served here.
