Mamak

After doing their time at Chinatown's Friday night markets, the Mamak crew have finally found a permanent home from which to serve their authentic Malaysian fare. The eatery's name comes from the mamak stalls that dot the Malaysian landscape, serving as places for people to congregate and gossip, as much as being purveyors of cheap and tasty food. After learning their culinary skills the hard way, by actually working in these Malaysian stalls, the Mamak boys specialise in traditional roti canai. The menu is based around authentically fluffy, flaky roti, but also includes staples such as nasi lemak, ayam goreng and the (not nearly as tacky as it sounds) Maggi goreng - a variation of mee goreng using Maggi noodles. Desserts revolve around sweeter versions of roti, but no meal is really complete without the teh tarik - a sweet tea which is 'stretched' by pouring it from a height to create froth.

Great feed.
After months of recommendations from friends we finally headed down to Mamak. I was expecting the line and in the end the wait was only 20 minutes. Gave us time to discuss the menu and watch as they make the Roti's in the front window. Within 2 mins of sitting down we had ordered and it was only 5 mins before our meal started arriving. We got both the plain and buttered Roti - plain was better. A dozen satay sticks - great even without the fab satay sauce. A lamb curry which was fantastic and fried chicken pieces which was ok. For 4 adults and 1 child we came out absolutely satisfied and for only $80. Highly recommended, great value.
