This modern restaurant, located opposite the Queen Elizabeth Oval, specialises in bringing the heady flavours of Malaysian, Thai and Cantonese cuisine to Bendigo. The extensive wine list here is one of the major drawcards, as is the menu which features such Asian staples as pad thai and stir-fries alongside more adventurous options.

Good food leaves a great taste....
Previous reviewers have obviously had bad experiences however our meal was more than satisfactory.
Food- is delicious, exciting and stylish. I urge any true foodie to find fault with these meals which we found were well directed by owner and chef. This was unexpected by Melbournites as we assumed simple flavours from a regional area. We were wrong!
Drinks- wine list was very extensive and pleasantly surprising, accommodating for wine buffs as well as those not willing to spend big bucks.
Service-many young staff and training could be improved however very friendly and diligent. Management was professional.
Do yourself a favour and do go to the Malayan Orchid. After many trips to Bendigo we had almost given up hope of finding a positive dining experience, however the Malayan Orchid has restored our faith in regional fine dining. We hold hope that they open up in Melbourne so we don't have to travel so far!!
Thank you.

Service leaves a sour taste
I agree with the previous reviewer- service is a real problem at Malayan Orchid, especially with larger groups. They seem to have some systemic problems getting the right meals out on time, and I have been disappointed by the service on more than one visit. The young waiters/waitresses do their best but they are spread too thinly and it's hard to get their attention. This is a shame as Malayan Orchid has a good atmosphere and some good dishes on their menu.
Our recent dinner for a group of 14 left a very sour taste- a sample of problems included:
-one main meal had not arrived after most others had been finished. When asked, the waiter apologised that he had not written it down, and brought it out soon after. When this was raised with a manager at the end of the night she said it was the waiter's mistake and made no apology about it.
-only 2 out of 4 plain rice serves arrived, we had to ask again for the others to be brought out.
-only 2 out of 4 fried rice serves arrived, we did not remind staff about these but later asked for them to be removed from the bill which was done by the manager with no comment or apology.
-no knives were provided for the table, we didn't even try to ask for these.
-a special dietary requirement meal was provided on request but served lukewarm.
-a premium sparkling mineral water was served flat, having been poured from a larger bottle in the kitchen rather than served from an individual small bottle. A requested replacement for this was also flat.
-slow service for our BYO wines and slow service clearing empty dishes.
Overall a very disappointing night. We are now on the lookout for another Bendigo restaurant for larger group bookings.

While the Malayan Orchid has potential to be a great modern Asian restaurant, their service lets them down big time.
The night started with stale prawn crackers which we were happy to forgive them for however as the night dragged on their service got worse. Ordering a banquest at 6:45pm you'd expect to be out by 8:30 at the latest however this was not the case.
Entrees in the banquet came out all over the place with some of our party having to ask where their entree was. Staff were not too fussed with removing empty glasses, bottles or plates but instead more than happy for our guests to keep shuffling items around to make room.
The first lot of mains came out (only after asking where they were) at 9:15pm, the second lot of mains finally arrived at our table 45 minutes after the first 2 dishes. We were served a plate of rice in between which we were advised was to "tide us over." Three quarters of our group walked out before dessert and coffee was even served.
The poor food service turned what was to be a celebratory night into a real downer. The drink service on the other side was over enthusiastic. Obviously their aim is to make their money on the drinks. If you're planning on having a good night out do yourself a favour and avoid Malayan Orchid.
