Housed in a converted warehouse, Maison Ama Lurra is a refreshing change from the usual store-bought "edginess" of most el cheapo cafe fit-outs. Private meeting rooms, free wi-fi and iPads for loan also help bring this place out of the grunge set.
But don't be fooled, this place is just as serious about its coffee as the usual hole in the wall with the fixies out the front. The bean of choice is its very own blend of Rainforest Alliance, and serving a complimentary petit four with every coffee is a nice touch.
The coffee is good (good enough to hold its own with all but Melbourne's best), but it's the teas that make Ama Lurra really stand out. There are no prepackaged tea bags in sight here, instead the Mariage Freres range of loose-leaf teas are imported from France. Each is served in a cast iron pot, and true tea aficionados will easily notice the care placed into each cuppa here.
