Maggie's Farm Shop
Even just driving into Maggie Beers s farm shop is a one in a life time experience. The picturesque fields, the gum tree lined driveway and the pheasant pens are enough to create a blissfully laidback feel. When Maggie changed her famous restaurant to her farm shop, there was an uproar from her then fans. Now because of her cooking show with Simon Bryant on the ABC and her ever growing range of home made products, she is more popular than ever. As you can imagine the Farm Shop is always bustling with activity.
Upon entering the shop you find yourself in a small photo gallery depicting Maggie throughout her career in the restaurant and the shop, but also there are pictures of her family that reinforce your thoughts that she is a spectacular lady who has been able to balance bringing up her children whilst having a great career. Then you move through to the main area of the shop where you are greeted with the most wonderful and welcoming staff, and told that there are tastings of all of Maggie s wonderful products scattered around the shop. The whole shop is tiled with terracotta which gives off a feeling of warmth and also makes one think of a Tuscan villa.
The shop is set out in three sections. One end of the shop has the main seating area set with very casual stools and tables and some of the products offered. While the middle of the shop is the main shopping area with a range of Maggie s favourite and seasonal products for you to chose from. Also there is the large wooden counter with two sales points, behind this there is the espresso machine, frangipan tart and terrine warmers which emit the most amazing aromas to excite the senses. At the opposite end of the shop there is the studio kitchen where The Cook and the Chef was filmed, although there is no filming done there anymore. To utilise the space they offer a free cooking demonstration at two pm everyday (not done by Maggie) to give you the experience of being part of the show, and to teach you how to use verjuice.
There is a casual picnic style lunch offered designed around Maggie s famous pate. All the pate baskets are designed for one, but can be stretched out between a few people if you decide to purchase some extra wood oven bread. Each basket includes one of Maggie s pates and a small accompaniment. For example, with the classic pheasant pate, there is included caramelized onion, a freekah salad, which is like cooked barley mixed with fresh herbs and lemon and quince paste. The only hot meal offered is the pheasant terrene which is like a gourmet sausage roll.
Maggie and her husband Collin are Barossa Valley wine makers along with Collin s brother. They have a vast variety of wine available for tasting at the farm shop, which you can also buy by the glass to go with your pate baskets. They offer a beautiful old vine Shiraz and a home block Shiraz. If you are in the mood for a sweeter wine there is an exquisite late picked Semillon.
They also offer some very tasty fresh mixed juices, ginger beer and sparkling mineral water. However what the locals know them for are their wonderful espresso coffees, brought out to your table and served in absolutely divine thermal glass mugs. The look of and aroma of the coffee could not be any more enticing.
During the winter months the farm shop has its wood fire going to keep the shop inviting and toasty warm. There is ample seating inside for fifty people, on both sides of the Farm Shop there is also seating outside for when the weather is a bit warmer, overlooking the beautifully crystal clear dam with olive trees and vines on the other side. This accompanies the Tuscan feel of the whole shop.
The best thing about the farm shop is that every time you set foot inside, there is always something new and exciting to taste and buy. Even with the ever expanding range of products and its increasing popularity it will always be relaxed and make you feel welcome. Maggie has made a winner here and it is likely that every visitor here will become a fan for life.
