Mado Cafe & Restaurant

Step out of the culinary pick 'n' mix of the South Bank main drag and into a bazaar of bright fabric, Middle Eastern knick-knacks and exotic aromas. Having settled on Turkish from the South Bank cuisine collage, Mado is the obvious choice. In contrast to its downmarket contemporaries, with their clichEd cuisine and distracting belly dancers, Mado offers a formal feast of traditional Turkish cuisine. The passionate crew behind this enterprise aim to introduce the public to 'proper' Turkish food, with all its rich and enticing flavours.

The menu provides a royal feast of Ottoman treats, from exotic Turkish classics, to such late-night favourites as pide (albeit upmarket versions of this much-abused snack). Delve deeper into the menu to discover traditional dishes with such evocative names as the 'Ancient Manti' (Turkish pasta stuffed with mince and topped with hung-garlic yoghurt, mint and paprika oil) or the 'Tulipmanian Sultan' (braised lamb shoulder filled with fig and silver beet). With a cabinet of pastel-toned ice creams beckoning, the star of the show for many is dessert. Mado serves sticky, chewy maras ice cream, flavoured with salep - ground orchid roots.

So authentic..what a feast!
What can I say! We were served by pleasant staff and a manager who is very passionate about his restaurant and very helpful.

I went with my family and we shared several of the dishes.

The entree dips were absolutely divine and the turkish bread that came with it was better than the bread that I have actually tried in turkey! For mains, I had a mixture of the spinach and cheese pide (flat bread) and 'iskender'. They were both delicious and the flavours really reminded me of my trip to Turkey, much more authentic than many of the Turkish restaurants I have visited outside of Turkey. For desert, I tried some of the Turkish ice cream with baklava, which was just divine. Overall, I left feeling absolutely full to the brim and very happy with the meal, I will definitely be returning to try their several 'banquet' options. Thanks Mado! :)

I though that Mado was one of the most unique restaurant in Brisbane, with all the decorative and traditional artfatics hanging on the walls. The food is absolutely sensational and the way the garnish there dish's to make the meals look so devise and elegant. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to all of my friends and to many of my family members to dine there.

Valentin Day in Mado
I celebrated Valentine's Day with my boyfriend at Mado. We knew that most restaurants in Brisbane were going to be, so we booked our table two days before.Because of the special occasion we tried some specialties.,For an entree we ordered fried haloumi cheese and for the main course the mixed grill platter. Both were delicious and unforgetable. At the end we had baklava with Turkish coffee and as a surprise we got two hearts made from chocolate.

great food and atmosphere
My boyfriend and I decided to dine in the Mado Restaurant Southbank last Saturday night. The decoration and atmosphere of this Turkish restaurant is outstanding. We had homemade Turkish dips and bread as a starter, lamb sish and Turkish pide as a main and some baklava and Turkish tea for dessert. The food was just great! There was a bellydancing performance as well, which was really good!

Overpriced
After intial excitement, we and our two friends were disappointed.

The service was okay. Not brilliant, but passable. But it was the food that was the biggest let down. Especially in regards to the cost. When we first arrived, the wait staff were reasonably prompt to serve us. We let them know that friends would be arriving soon. Once our friends arrived, we then we waited a considerable time before our order was taken. It was not a busy Saturday night.

We ordered the Anatolian banquet at $45/per head. But to call it a banquent is generous. The dips were great, but the only drawback was that there was too little bread to go with them. In order to get our value out of the dips, we had to order more bread (which we were then additionally charged!). Far more dip than bread. So most of the dips were wasted.

The next course were the entrees. They were nice, but again, nothing amazing at all. Our mains were the biggest disappointment. Just a few pieces of meat on a skewer and a few pieces of lettuce for the "salad". The salad was no more than a lettuce garnish. The meat with the shish was nicely done, but given the price, there was not much to eat. It was very ordinary. Dessert was pleasant. But overall, we were surprised when we had come to the end of the banquent to find that that was all we were getting. We were still hungry.

For what seemed like the chance for an exotic dining experience, it was rather run of the mill.

Not happy Mado!
Admittedly my four friends and I went to Mado last Saturday night with fairly high expectations, having walked past the restuarant in the lovely South Bank surrounds many a time. Unfortunately, we were extremely disappointed to find that despite the alluring atmosphere of the restaurant (the belly dancing was great!), it offered very little else. Although about 30% of the tables were empty, it still took 25 minutes after being seated to receive a menu and a tumbler of water. The wait staff were doing their best to remain pleasant but they were completely run off their feet, deliberately avoiding eye contact with pretty much every table to the point where it became a joke. We made 3 attempts and had to ask 3 different wait staff to get some water glasses to go with the tumbler of water that we finally got. It also took about an hour and a half to get our meals! One main came out a good 20 minutes before the others. One friend and I had ordered the same meal and were horrified to discover that we had just paid $24 for 8 lukewarm bite sized peices of charred, dried un-marinated meat, a palm full of chickpeas and a leaf of lettuce (no dressing) - literally. It appeared that ingredients were missing from the meal so they had just thrown in whatever was in stock. For that price we certainly expected to get a meal that was half decent. The wait staff informed us that they were not expecting it to be busy as there was dancing in the street, so they were a little short staffed and we had to "be patient". After our disappointing meal, we refused an offer of dessert and the waitress soon came out with free samples of their icecream and gelati as an apology for such poor service and meals. While this was a lovely gesture on her behalf and having worked in hospitality for 6 years myself I certainly did feel for the poor girl, it is simply unacceptable for a restaurant to think that 4 tiny bowls of icecream can possibly make up for an entire night of shocking service and poor food. If a prominent restaurant at South Bank cannot provide decent service and quality food on an uncrowded Saturday night, when can we expect good service?

We left feeling very disappointed. It was not a very busy night, but we had to wait at least an hour in between our entrees and mains. After first course was cleared, the host informed us that our mains were the next ones to come out. We waited and waited until another waiter asked us if we had received our mains yet, apologised, went to check and didn't return. Another waiter came over and asked the same question, checked and informed us that the chef was doing them. The host then again came over and asked if we still hadn't been served (it mustn't have been obvious...) and went to check and gave us the same response. We were then asked if we wanted to try one of the desserts while we waited??!!! Why this was a logical I don't know, we weren't about to order more food we had to wait for. We were brought two small pieces of Turkish delight, I suppose as an apology. While we waited for the 'next meals to come' at least ten other meals came out from the kitchen. Our mains finally arrived over an hour later. Seriously disappointing. The other infuriating part was that a couple came in and sat down and within 15 minutes, was served a feast! Breads, entrees, mains all at once - and while we were still eating the chef came out to chat with them - clearly friends of his = special treatment. Not on. There appeared to be no system or communication whatsoever between the staff and the kitchen and we weren't even offered anything to make it right. With a great Turkish restaurant on Little Stanley Street just down the road, we won't be returning or recommending Mado. A lesson in hospitality needed.

Food good, service great, top marks for this Southbank venue
A group of eight dined here last night. A quiet night allowed us to meander through the menu and take time choosing our mains. For entree we just all shared in servings of the gourmet Turkish bread which was delightful, tasty and left you wanting more. The mains we all had were tasty, well balanced with flavour and beautifully presented. The only comment of a negative side was the lamb dishes were a little lacking in lamb. The mixed grill was huge and almost ended up beating the guy that ordered it. Our surprise was two complimentary dishes from the chef for the group. The swordfish, for those who had it, was "amazingly tasty and not dry". Mado, we'll be back here, you were amazing and at $30 per head there were no grumbles from any of the group.
