Restaurant Information
Mad Cow
Mad Cow is one of the shining glories in Justin Hemmes's swanky Ivy complex on George Street. With a name like this, it's not hard to work out the cuisine. This is a steakhouse, complete with a type of broiler used in some of the best US steakhouses. Yeehaa! But cowboy-isms aside, this is quite the classy eatery. The menu had been designed by Est.'s Peter Doyle, and features high-end steaks including Black Angus and wagyu. A surprise here is the selection of high-quality steak-free dishes such as the roasted saddle of rabbit, king brown mushrooms, baby heirloom carrots.

Not Mad here
Having dined in Melbourne earlier in the week and having what I thought was the best steak, it was with some trepidation that we went to Mad Cow. I needn't have worried, from the moment we were seated in our cozy booth and and given some sensational bread while we gave the menu a once over I felt this was going to be a great experience. Our waiter was great attentive but not in your face, friendly but stopping at sitting and telling a life story. Although he paled in comparison to the sommelier, his knowledge and easy style was a refreshing change. Sharing soft shell crab as a starter was a great choice, plenty for both although a little more spice wouldn't have gone astray. My partner opted for the wagyu, very flavoursome but not worth the hefty price tag. I figured I'd go with the choice I had earlier in the week and went for the ribeye on the bone... sensational, cooked to perfection and while not as plump as previous it had more taste, although the horseradish cream didn't have the punch. We finished with pavlova and Valrhona chocolate, again neither disappointed. Had we not had our fill we would surely have taken up the kind offer of entry to the 'lounge'... next time and there will be a next time.
