Lucia's

This restaurant must be due for heritage listing. Lucia's has been in the Central Markets since Jesus was a boy, and still maintains consistency of food, with decor that hasn't changed since the late 1960s. Even the prices seem to be stuck in the 80s. The feeling of organised chaos reigns in the mad scramble to order at the counter, but the staff seem to know who was there first. The food has all the warmth and generosity of home-cooked Italian food. Where else in the world can you get a lunchtime bowl of pasta for $7? Service is fast and efficient, if not always friendly - but remember they're serving a lot of people. Lucia's is licenced, but the only way you'd know is because unbroken cases of wine sit in front of the service counter. Ask, and they'll happily pour you a glass. The sweets cabinet contains a classic collection of house made cakes and biscuits. Many an Adelaider claims Lucia's makes the best coffee, which could be true, as long as you like your coffee strong and bitter. The perfect reason to have that sweet slice of semolina cake.

Fantastic value and atmosphere
Sit back, enjoy some fine Italian fare and watch the crowds bustle past as shoppers fill their carts with fresh market produce. The food is dirt cheap (most mains around $9 - $12) and top quality. Pick a wine from the counter, a meal from the menu and relax. Renowned in some circles for their coffee, I actually find it a wee bit strong - but if that's your cup of tea (pardon the pun) then go for it.

Still Fantastic
The coffee is to die for - you sometimes have to wait as all of Adelaide seem to drink or eat here.
The food is plain but good, and great value.
I have been coming here for more than 30 years and hope for another 30.
