Los Amates

The hearty, authentic Mexican - think chicken enchiladas dressed with verde, served with rice and an iceberg salad - is best washed down with a Sol beer or some spine-tingling Mexican tequila.

A bit overrated and overpriced, and it didn't help that it looked like it would be cosy and warm, but was actually too chilly to take overcoats and scarves off all night. The menu was well-detailed and provided plenty of background information; it also warned that food had to be cooked to order and we could expect a wait, but it seemed like a really long wait. It would have been good if the share platter had been brought out separately to the main, for the sake of elbow room and not letting one thing go cold in favour of another. The vibe was nice and the waiters were pleasant, although one took the platter away before we'd quite finished.

There was a great range of tequilas and mezcals you probably couldn't get usually - the $16 per shot Patron Silver tequila was the high point. It makes me think Mexican's not my favourite cuisine - these dishes were a bit samey - but okay for what it was, if that's authentic.

Awesome place
I was very impressed with Los Amates. The owner opened the restaurant especially at lunchtime for a work function I was organising. We weren't sure what to expect, but the food was very tasty, the staff were fantastic and the venue couldn't have been more perfect. The owner gave a little speech about the traditional meal and its history, and with the Mexican decor, the Mexican staff, the great selection of Mexican beer, the experience was, well truly Mexican!

I would definitely recommend this place, and it is great for groups!

Fantastic!!
We haven't experienced Mexican food like the one we had at Los Amates since we visited Mexico 12 years ago. We've tried every other so-called Mexican eatery in this country but to be served by Mexicans and to know that the menu and the meals are really authentic and there is no Tex-Mex or so-called "modern Mexican" (where Aussie chefs combine Australian food with Mexican flavours), it was such a great feeling. We had always wanted to eat the famous mole or tamales again or Puerco en Pasilla and everything on the menu is so mexican that we ordered lots of things and the staff told we were ordering too much. So we are certainly coming back again as we were pleased to see Mexicans sitting at other tables around us chatting with other Mexicans across the tables. My wife and I truly felt we were somewhere in Mexico and it made the night very special with great music and a nice relaxing atmosphere - a true experience.
