If you think rock lobsters really do rock, then Lobster Cave would be the place to indulge your obsession. Since it opened back in the early 1990s, this Beaumaris beauty has become one of Melbourne's renowned seafood stalwarts, with its overwhelming selection of fresh Australian and New Zealand marine bites. Most of the mains are quite affordable, considering the quality of dishes such as the coconut prawns, crispy-roasted duck legs, and steamed jumbo Spring Bay mussels. But the most avid of seafood addicts will loosen up the purse strings for the almighty signature dishes. The Ferg Burger, named after the Lobster Cave's owner Bill Ferg, is a key example, featuring a flame-grilled half Southern Rock lobster, tempura spanner crab in a sticky Thai glaze, spiced lamb, wagyu beef pattie, and a whole lot more.

One of Melbourne's treasures!
Looking through yourrestaurants.com.au I was amazed no-one has reviewed the Lobster Cave. My main experience has been lunch during the week and the Lobster Caves splendid range of lunch specials. Although a seafood restaurant the Lobster Cave feels very much like a French restaurant when it comes down to food, atmosphere and service.
Especially on a cold Melbourne day I can think of nowhere finer to go for lunch be it as a twosome or a group that here. The value is superb. It's very much like the old Lynchs in Domain Road Toorak except at Lynchs you have the Toorak and South Yarra ladies lunching. Extras are/were a real trap at Lynchs as their lunch special could really blow out with any extras.
At the Lobster Cave it's mainly Beaumauris ladies and mixed groups dining. That you can lunch in such splendid style at comparatively modest cost is one of Melbournes great dining treats.
Just back from Trouville/Deauville France near Honfleur. Australian and French seafood preparations and norms aside, the Lobster Cave could easily match its French cousins.
This review is late 2008. It's a reminder I must make a return visit and soon!
