Livebait

With a water's edge position and views like this, you could be forgiven for mistaking Livebait's location for one on a Mediterranean island somewhere, taking in and cooking up the day's catch as it comes ashore - if it weren't for the unmistakable Melbourne skyline. But a meal here will still certainly transport you to places exotic and sun-drenched, with dishes that invoke the flavours of South America via the Mediterranean. The barbecued swordfish with pickled cucumber and watercress salad is hard to go past, but simple, mouth-watering crustacean dishes like Moreton Bay bugs, crispy soft-shell crab and New Zealand scampi, each served with burnt garlic butter, sauce gribiche and lemon, might just do it. Less fishy options include braised beef cheeks with smoked eel puree and salsa verde, and a Clare Valley grain fed scotch fillet with beans lyonnaise and gorgonzola dolce butter.

Special Occassion - Got the price tag but not the value!
*Lazy service
*Difficult to get their attention when we needed something
*Entrees were mixed - mine good, my Fathers not so good, Husbands not good at all!
* Mains - mine good, others were not with my husbands fish being overcooked and tough.
* When complained only got offered a complimentary coffee (for him only).
* Would not ever revisit - had much better food at Kobe Jones (and service).

What's happened to them?
After a couple of years of having regular family 'special occasion' dinners here and having nothing but top quality food each and every time, which has made us continue to return, last night something was terribly wrong.
It was somewhat busier than usual for a Tuesday night which resulted in us waiting quite a while to get any menus or drinks, otherwise the service was fine. However the food was was quite appalling, especially considering their normally high standard. My sister had the scallops, served cold (on purpose? we weren't sure). The calamari entree was in an oily batter and left unfinished and the steamed mussels didn't taste right. The teriyaki salmon was recieved welcomingly by one, however the risotto was no better than your local food court and the garlic prawns had an off-putting aroma (may have been Szechuan pepper?) and some suspicious black bits.
All in all, for the amount of money spent here, it was quite ridiculous what was served up. Usually we're quite happy spending the money when we get what usually is served, however after last night's experience we will not be returning for quite a while.

Yummy food, but average service
The view was great. We ordered the nori & sashimi plate, which on the menu says "serves 2", but it was a bit small as main. The waiter didn't correct us, but it may be better as an entree. It was very nicely prepared and yummy though. Our friend had the linguini and it was a bigger meal. It didn't bother us too much as we have room to have their yummy dessert. The waiters seem a bit confused though, and didn't know who ordered what. One waiter gave me chopsticks (for my main) after we ordered, but then another waiter took the chopsticks away when he collected the plate for the entree. I had to ask for the chopsticks when my main arrived.

Entrees were outstanding
We had a really excellent standard of dinner here. Even the beer battered fish and chips that the kids ate were pretty awesome.

Entrees such as the king prawns with mash, currants and capsicum; or the zucchini flowers deep fried and stuffed with bug tail meat were really special.

The only thing that was a little disappointing was the crab served with the seafood linguine was a bit powdery, but otherwise the meal was excellent.

The manager of the restaurant on the night was 1st class, and made us very comfortable even with the 30 minute wait for a table.

not so great
i wanted to take my partner for a special evening out in melbourne. not being local, i checked a few places on the web and thought livebait sounded like a nice seafood restaurant for a special occasion. i rang and booked and mentioned that we were celebrating... i was pretty horrifed when we arrived and had a table just outside the kitchen and bathrooms, away from the windows. the menu came on a piece of paper that doubled as a placemat, and looked like a list of items from a fish and chip shop. it took us ages to order and the "cocktail" we had while waiting was pretty ordinary...to be honest i was pretty unimpressed by the whole thing. dont be fooled, this is not fine dining, just an upmarket fish'n'chip cafe.
