Throwing its hat in the ring with the glut of great cafes that already call Balmain home, this little-engine-that-could seems able to hold its own. Named after owner Jamie Woolcott's diminutive grandmother, Little Ethel's pint-sized moniker is no misnomer - the space itself is tiny. Despite its size, Woolcott manages to pack a surprising amount into the space, from the espresso bar, deli and gourmet fare right down to the abundance of quirky charm crammed into the tiny cafe. Think brightly coloured slat tables (bowling club specials, circa 1972) sitting on a random square of astroturf and you'll get a fairly good idea of why this cafe will fit into the Balmain landscape effortlessly. And, of course, the Adriano Zumbo pastries won't hurt, either.
