Little Chutney's

Offering a more upmarket dining experience than sister restaurant Chutney Mary's, Little Chutney's is a classy, modern Indian dining experience. Forget your regular curry powder, here the spices are prepared each day for the individual dishes. The menu is full of tasty treats, such as the baby eggplant curry with ground cashews, peanuts, sesame seeds and coconut milk, and of course most curries are served with a nice dollop of mango chutney on top. The space is stylish, luxurious and, with the addition of a slick bar area, so much more entertaining than your average Indian restaurant. Little Chutney's is open from midday most days, but they also offer weekend breakfasts with an exotic Indian twist.

Best curry in a long time
6 friends were all raving about the dishes on offer, Beef vindaloo was tasty, butter chicken staple favourite, spicy lamb curry, brilliant, Chicken tikka amazing, lemon chicken great for mild pallets. The wine list was impressive, service attentive and great conversation with good acoustics. Best curries I've had in a long time.

Much improved level of service
Went to Little Chutney's for tapas. The atmosphere was bustling, packed out but still quiet. I do like how the eatery is broken up by partitions, it does signifantly cut down on sound. Marked improvement with service, now attentive which was a pleasant surprise.

Again ordered the mixed tasting plate (which was such a treat the first time) and the tandoori tasting plate which included king prawns, gourmet lamb chevups sausages, fish bites - everything tasted great. Both tasting plates were huge and priced accordingly, had a great bottle of wine, decent wine list mainly Australian. Quick, easy, glamourous - love it.

Better than expected
After considerable persuasion from friends, I ate at Little Chutney's last night with fairly low expectations. I am not a fan of big sister Chutney Mary's but once I stepped into this tavern-style eatery, I slowly started to change my tune.

It is beautifully decorated; dark lighting, funky plastic retro chairs and plush booths and high tables with bar stools overlooking an impressive bar. At 9pm, the restaurant was more than half full and it was a Wednesday. What I did appreciate was that although it was busy, it wasn't loud. The booths are pretty private and it didn't feel crowded.

We started with a mixed tasting plate accompanied by Kingfisher's, a must when eating Indian. It was very filling, moderately priced and a twist on the basic starters usually offered by Indian restaurants. This included vegetarian samosas, lamb cutlet, parathas and yellow dahl. For mains we shared tandoori swordfish steak and a pumpkin curry as well as rice and naan. I was surprised that for $25, the swordfish comprises of two steaks which were well spiced and tasty. The pumpkin curry was quite basic but spicy and hot and delicious.

Unfortunately, like the rest of the chain (Chutney Mary's, Cinnamon Club etc), they do need to work on their level of service. Generally pretty slack, but when you do get someone's attention, waiters are friendly. A good meal, I'd go again!
