Line Bait Fishcafe

Located in leafy O'Connell Street, this no-nonsense, sea-lover's delight comes complete with a specials board full of the freshest market offerings.

Since opening, the fish cafe has developed quite the reputation with locals - and not for the company it keeps either. This casually formal fish cafe provides diners with a new take on the traditional fish shop eatery. All of this with a neat Mediterranean influence.

The usual suspects appear on the menu - salt and pepper squid, fish and chips - but they are prepared and presented by Chef Sam Tabibi with a flair for something more than the stock-standard fare of a fish and chippery. Tomato and fetta prawns lighten up the selection and stay true to the Mediterranean-inspired menu and the chips are starting to get a bit of a name for themselves too - for being so darn good.

famous chef?!
The entrees were nice enough but the mains were horrible! Overcooked dry fish, very ordinary salad and even the chips were not that good! The paella was also tasteless! Desert was not much better! Lots of 'not availables' for items we chose from the menu. We were given discount vouchers to make amends but couldn't be bothered using them for this place. A big TV for atmosphere? Forget it. The only good thing was the waitress who was nice but even she appeared to cop a blast from the cooks out the back spoiling the atmosphere even further. Really hated it and will NOT be back.

Very Disappointed ...
An evening out to celebrate a birthday was doomed from the start. Had to wait for menus - apparaently they don't have enough menus when all tables are ordering! An order for a Malibu & coke, sorry no Malibu, ok, what about a Baileys & ice - sorry no Baileys, had to settle for a Lemon Lime & Bitters. All drinks were just dumped on the table. Mains were ordered and 4 out of the 5 arrived about 40 minutes later, ok given 2 seafood paella required 20-30 minutes cooking time. One seafood paella didn't arrive and discovered it had been forgotten! Order finally arrived when everyone else finished. Given it was a hot night, the boys ordered James Squires Golden Ale's off the drinks menu. Round two, the same again was ordered, but Amber Ale was served this time [coudln't see that on the drinks menu]. Round three, this time Golden Ale. Round four, sorry we have run out of James Squires! Settled for 2 complimentary Heinekens. To their credit, the chef provided an apology for meal stuff-up and a 25% duscount voucher. The customer service left a lot to be desired; no-one seemed to be in charge in the dining area.

Good to see your back
Its great to see the original crew back. Dined in on the weekend and was impressed with the new menu and the array of fresh local seafood on offer. The service was friendly and helpfull. Keep up the good work and yes! we`ll be back.

Customer service?
Finding a good restaurant with tasty food, good atmosphere and attentive staff is tricky and we thought we had found it with Line Bait. I took my mother there for a Saturday night and mum's pretty easy to please. We ordered oysters for entree and crab/fish and chips for mains - both very good. However whilst it was busy we arrived at 7.30pm and were seated. We ordered by 7.45pm and the oysters came out at 8.45pm. We woofed these down by around 9pm and the mains came at around 9.40pm. Couple of things - our drinks came out promptly but we had to ask for a bottle of water with two glasses and had to ask for some bread to tide us over until the entrees came out. As an Adelaide boy who has run restaurants in the US for the last 6 years these guys could do with some lessons in customer service. If your busy in the kitchen get another busboy out there to help, two guys are not enough on a Saturday night with 50 covers.

Spoilt for choice
This was a very comfortable experience. The staff were friendly and the service was efficient. Large menu so something for everyone. The barramundi was great - two generous pieces with a fresh salsa, however the grilled flathead (with chips and salad) was disappointing as a reasonably healthy sounding dish was spoilt by being drowned in butter.
