The Lincoln

Upstairs from The Lincoln's bar you will find a dining area decked out in 1920s-era glamour. Many of the fittings in this refurb'd space are authentic period pieces, but they are combined with idiosyncratic new touches, such as copper Neoz table lamps, to create a relaxed, intimate dining experience. If you're heading out for a special occasion, book the hexagonal Krug room and choose from a three-, five- or seven-course menu - washed down with a bottle of that world-famous Champagne, of course.

Executive chef Richard Duff's (ex-Bibendum, London) menu blends classic European techniques with new-world influences. Entrees might include a smoked eel and horseradish tart with glazed baby beets and apple; or a quail salad with egg ravioli. The mains list features such desirables as rabbit and prune croustade; and poached jewfish with lentils and salsa verde. Finish up with a poached peach and Earl Grey panna cotta, or a selection from the thoughtful cheese list, which includes European highlights such as Roquefort Papillon, or Kervella Rondolet from one of Perth's award-winning cheese makers.

Great Find
My husband and I went here for dinner on a Friday night after work, and there was a pretty good crowd in for drinks. We rocked up without a reservation and were able to get in ok. After a nice cocktail, we were seating in the Krug room for dinner, which was lovely, really nice setting and quite intimate. We ordered a couple of starters to share - steak tartare and chorizo tarte, which were both delicious. For mains we had the gnocchi with mushrooms and truffles and the pork belly, which were both amazing - especially the pork belly which was perfectly crisp on the outside and melty in the middle. Mmmmmmm. We had no room for dessert, but overall, had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed the food. The service was also very good. We'll be back.

Where is everybody?
Have been twice: once for supper on a Sunday night around 11pm, and once for a pre-theatre drinks at 7pm on a Saturday. It's okay - not as great as you would expect from their silly A-list posturing (which meant I didn't go until a couple of months after it opened - it's a pretty bad look to be rejected at the door in front of your date - I'll choose somewhere with a responsible / classy door policy like Will & Toby's) but it's really missing something. I don't know...customers?

These kind of places are perfect for early dining or a late supper. The thing is, Sydney people don't tend to eat at those times. My Sunday night supper was after a great night dancing and we hadn't eaten since lunch. You're not spoiled for choice at this time of the night. When is Sydney going to act like a grown up city and offer 24 hr dining? Anyway, the food was fantastic: clever, appealing to look at, and tasty: scallop cerviche, duck tortellini, zucchini flower. Drinks good too: I had a Hemingway Daiquiri and a beer - pretty poor selection of beer by the way - and my date a pretty fruity thing. The service seemed a bit amateur but they'd been open a few weeks. Atmosphere was average. It was not the place to linger; it was full of loud industry people, which was a pity because the couch was really comfortable and my date and I could have settled there for longer. Apart for the industry crowd, there didn't seem to be any other customers. Which is not a good look.

The second meal - still with me? - second meal was pre-theatre drink and small meal. Again, no customers. In fact, at 7pm on a Saturday we were the only people dining there. I had a Negroni and my date a Tanqueray & tonic. Food great once again, the steak tartare was excellent served as a starter, as was the scallop and prawn sauteed Provence-style. Service was a lot better; there were a couple of waiting staff I recognised from other places, but one thing annoyed me: after the meal I made my way to the bathroom, and, as I passed the waiter, told him that I was ready for the bill. When I returned from the bathroom, the waiter was gone - remember, we were the only people in the place - and the bill had been placed on the table IN FRONT OF MY DATE! What would have been cool would have been for the waiter to have the bill ready as I returned from the bathroom and I could have paid it discreetly, or, wait until I return, then present the bill at the table. I don't want to get into a discussion on sexism, etc; for me it's all about manners, and some restaurants have it absolutely right, Icebergs for example, and can flex according to the customer. Those kind of details done right are what you expect to find in a venue worthy of an exclusive door policy.

All round, great food, service improving, but as a dining venue the atmosphere suffers through lack of customers. My opinion is that, like me, many people heard the bad publicity around the door policy (nothing inherently bad in rejecting 'Home and Away' faux-stars though) and decided to not bother.
