Lime Leaves

For a smallish, suburban restaurant, Lime Leaves sure packs a punch. The menu is extensive and full of aromatic, authentic and genuine-tasting Thai dishes. Housed on the ground floor of a beautiful free-standing heritage building looking onto Queanbeyan Park, the atmosphere is really special - there are several intimate rooms with open fireplaces and views of the park, and the vibe is cosy and welcoming. The blackboard specials are always a hit with regulars, and many of the dishes on the menu have vegetarian alternatives so this is a well-liked option for locals of all tastes and persuasions.

Absolutely Sensational!
We had a fabulous family dinner at Lime Leaves recently to celebrate my husband's birthday. We all had the banquet and the food was absolutely sensational. It was just delicious and tasted very authentic - it really was divine. The staff were very friendly - lots of smiles - and also very accommodating and great with our children. Nothing was too much trouble. We will definitely be making many more trips over the border to dine at Lime Leaves in future!

Great food but there could be more
We've been going to Lime Leaves for a number of years and it appears as though the portions are becoming steadily smaller. You'd think this would make the staff smile, but alas, they don't really engage the customer. But perhaps they don't have to because the food is excellent and will keep people coming back for more.

Good food, Thai taste.
I can understand why some people commented about the service there. There was no smile and they didn't go out of their way to make you feel welcome. However, I can't find fault with their service. We were served promptly without any hassle at all, just no smile. I was a little nervous to approach them in Thai but I still did and it was good. The food has Thai taste not Westernised Thai taste. Some people may not like it as it's not the same as what they get used to from other Thai restaurants in Australia but as a Thai I love it! We had Tipsy Prawns & Drunken Squids and Roast Duck Curry. They both were very tasty. The wine list is quite impressive. Baileys Frontignac is on the list which was quite interesting. We had this wine when we visited Baileys winery and didn't expect to see it in a restaurant's wine list. So that's our choice of wine for the night and it went really well with the curry. All in all I recommend this restaurant to everyone!

A very nice night out
My husband and I had heard good things about Lime Leaves and it definitely lived up to its reputation.
It is in an old colonial style house which has been converted to a lovely atmospheric restaurant. There was a mixture of family groups and couples there and people seemed to be having a nice time.

The service is a little off putting as the staff don't smile or exchange any pleasantries with you. We had to wait about 10-15 minutes before anyone came to take our order or offer drinks, but once we had ordered the food came in a reasonable amount of time, and we had finished two courses and drinks within an hour.

The best thing about Lime Leaves is the food - we ordered chicken and potato curry puffs and vegetarian spring rolls for entrees and they were absolutely delicious! We wished we had ordered more entrees as everything we saw on other tables looked just as appealing. Our mains were also lovely - the chicken pad thai is very authentic and our vegetarian dish was nice as well - although we felt the entrees were the highlight!

The food is quite affordable with entrees being around $6-$8 and mains being around $11-20.

So don't go to Lime Leaves if you are expecting super friendly service and a fast meal, but if you are ok with inexpressive waitresses and a more leisurely paced evening this place is definitely worth a try because the food is something you'll remember!

We will be going back many times and would highly recommend it for a nice dinner out.

Lovely venue
Whilst the venue is just gorgeous, the food and the service do not really live up to expectations. We were initially seated at a table that was too high, so one felt like a child, and it was uncomfortable. Luckily we were able to move. The meal was lovely though I have had far better. The service slow and whilst not unfriendly, we didn't see any smiles from any of the staff over the course of the night.

A waste of an evening
We had often travelled past this venue and considered the mid-1920s-style building to be appealing for a visit into this Thai restaurant. We therefore booked with a group of friends a table of 8 a week in advance (we were also pleased to venture there given that it was a BYO restaurant). However, upon arrival we were notified that we had not made a booking.... it was not after considerable searching of the booking diary that a note was found that had not been entered into diary. We were then told that we would be 'accommodated' if we waited for half an hour. We gladly obliged as we were all keen to have a nice evening eating Thai food.

The food was average and the portions were very small. Only one small rice bowl was served for a table of 8 - we all shared a banquet to make things easier. Also, we never received a smile or any exchange of pleasantries from the staff as they clearly took the view that it was OUR mistake for the booking not being entered into the diary.

Upon finishing the banquet, the discussion among us all was not only about the clear lack of professionalism among the staff, but the lack of quantity of food provided for an 8 person banquet - we were all still quite hungry despite 4 supposedly main meals plus rice being provided.

To top the evening off, we were later informed upon paying (no notices within the restaurant or on the menu) that corkage for each wine bottle would be $7.00 and $2.00 for every beer. We were told that this is what 'everyone paid' and that we should pay it because we had been 'accomodated' that night.

The restaurant states it is Thai, but having lived regularly in Thailand due to my work committments, I can honestly state that it is just a massive charade. I dont think I have ever come across such dreadful service for a restaurant that appears on the surface to be quite appealing.

Authenticity
My husband and I have both lived in Thailand and return every year to holiday. We meet frequently with a number of friends who have also lived in Asia, and feel the same as we do about this restaurant. The food - scrumptious and authentic. The staff friendly and obliging. You just can't beat it!!!
