Named for David Bowie's seminal 1971 psychedelic anthem, Hawthorn's latest cafe is already scoring plenty of runs in the street cred department. Adding to the zero-G theme, first-time cafe owner Sandra Powell has completed the rustic interior with a selection of wooden chairs suspended above diners' heads.
Aside from gravity-defying furniture, inside Life on Mars you'll also find the current trend for locally produced, free range produce and left-of-centre breakfast staples has found another home. Chef Fletcher Zane - who has spent time rattling pans at Giuseppe Arnaldo & Sons, Icebergs, Stokehouse and Quay - is leading the charge to revitalise tired breakfast options, so expect much more than your average bacon and eggs here.
