Libertine

A successful late-night groover, Kings Cross favourite Libertine has spawned an equally chic sibling in the trendy Barracks complex in Brisbane. Effortlessly urbane, the interior is a nod to the enchanting orient of Indochina with ornate and opulent low-hanging chandeliers, classic Chinoiserie chairs and dark timber tables.

On the culinary front, chef Thang Nguyen blends traditional French and Vietnamese ingredients in an eclectic mix of snacks-cum-entrees with dishes such as the Mekong Sub, a crusty French baguette topped with marinated pork, chicken liver pate, pickles, cucumber and coriander lovingly drizzled with homemade chilli sauce. Main dishes are just as extravagant with offerings such as spicy Vietnamese beef bourguignon or pork Celeste featuring slow braised caramelised pork belly.

No expectations
One dish still sits in the back of my mind.... fried silken tofu... simple yet well executed. Sums up the menu. Dishes are great for what they present in charming simplicity rather than ornate and complicated fusions. Had only a lazy Sunday to sample reduced menu but will return for more.
Wine was well thought and loved the staff picks on the back page. Found a floral affordable germanic reilsing that complemented the menu perfectly.
Well done team.

So Disappointing
Firstly, let me vent, this restaurant is in Petrie Terrace, not Paddo as they claim.
We went for dinner this evening and were very disappointed. The only high spot were the spring rolls that took me back to Paris Vietnamese.
The Beef Bourginion was reasonable sized but ordinary and a crime served in a cold serving dish. Is it a Brisbane thing? Hot plates for mains are rare here and putting tepid Beef Stew onto a cold plate is something even the much maligned Brits don't do.
Service for some reason seemed inattentive, water was slow coming, specials were never mentioned to us.
