Mmmm, duck fat!!!
If you want a quiet and romantic place to dine this is not your restaurant. Not because of lack of atmosphere (the place is quite quaint with the butcher uniforms, etc) but because of the NOISE!. The cement walls and floors and from memory, low ceiling, make the restaurant cavern of noise. I dined in a group of five and I found it hard to hear the person sitting at the head of the table.

Apart from the noise detraction the food is fantastic. I don't know why people are complaining of portion sizes because all of us had more than enough to eat. In fact, I felt as if I had been given too much in my Le Creusset style pot.

If you want value for money, order the tapas to start off with. Good serving sizes and more than enough to go around. I had the duck l'orange and as stated above, had more than enough in my pot. Great flavour and tenderness.

My favourite part of the meal though was the vegetables. The French sure know how to cook a potato!!! My favourites were the white beans (melt in your mouth) and the mushrooms cooked in duck fat. Thankyou Mary Moody and your books on your travels in The Dordogne region of France for inspiring me to try anything cooked in goose fat, albeit duck fat.

St Tropez on a plate - if you can wait
Never was much good at French at school. Never had the ear for the accent. Ended up having to get by with a few mumbled verbs and a variety of shrugs and Gallic facial expressions. Still, I think my linguistic ability would still outdo this shocker of a restaurant.

Left standing at the door on arrival. Waved towards our table. Left sitting for five minutes with no offer of a glass of something or even a menu to look at. I wondered at the time whether we should cut and run, but chose to see it through.

Ordered the tapas to start and a couple of steaks. The tapas never arrived - perhaps they took a siesta forgetting that they'd revoked their Spanish background and were now fully-fledged Francophiles?

The steaks though did arrive - although it took 40 minutes and I think they may have been sitting under the heat lamp for most of that time - not unlike a St Tropezienne under the Provencal sun - only even more leathery. The same story on the tables either side of us - at least they got that element of 'egalite' right.

Good food sad about the pace
It is a shame that the undeniably good food is let down by inexperienced waiters and poor service. The wine list is also very disappointing, lacking a good selection of middle-range wines.

Not you usual French restaurant
The meals were simple yet very tasty and extremely well -presented. The waiter that served us was attentive and clearly knew what was on offer. And the only wait we encountered was the dessert (apple tart) that I was informed prior to ordering was baked to order, otherwise had the option from a danty tart tray or an array of French cheese to choose from on-the-spot.

Food wasn't bad (had the rib-eye), but it's not value for money. I spend $$$ and I was still hungry afterwards. The service was good; the waitress knew how to get you to order the sides with your main meal.

Food was ok, long wait between courses, inobtrusive or inattentive service, hard to tell?

So simple, so chic
Well... can I just say that I loved the whole unpretentious b.s. that this restaurant doesn’t have. Loved the pigeon, loved the petit pois and loved the smart wait staff who suggested a wonderful match with our meals. Great restaurant, will be back for more.

Pretentious
Food is actually very nice. Service was terrible - can't handle a crowd when busy. Make sure you order enough or you'll go hungry.

Service wonderful and unobtrusive, ambience superb, the food and the LONG lists of sides to die for, not to mention the extensive wine list... recommend the duck breast and the frisee salad.
