When life hands you lemons, make a haloumi salad, or so the motto should go for inner-city diners. Serving the hungry folk of Surry Hills is this cheerful eatery nestled on Crown Street and clearly identifiable by the rather large (and appropriate) lemon hanging out front.
Inside, cafe-goers will find a petite space kitted out with couches, tables, chairs, friendly staff and a rather cute approach to interior decorating. As well as a bold pop-art mural hailing the humble lemon as a hero, little citrus clues are also to be found throughout the diner, from the subtle plastic fruits hanging from the ceiling to the adorable pattern on the waitress's sneakers.
Lemon offers hearty and reliable breakfast and lunch fare. The menu includes old faithful recipes for those who don't like their bacon and eggs messed with (an occurrence all too frequent on these streets) alongside some creative tummy-fillers such as the corn fritter stack, the Tuscan chicken burger or the chorizo risotto.
Everything is available for takeaway and there are plenty of options for vegetarians - although they should know that by turning down the prosciutto open sandwich, there is a heaven that they will never know.
This little charmer is perfect for morning coffees or weekend brekkies, though be warned: it's already counted a favourite among many locals, so you'll more than likely have to wait just a moment for a table.
