Small and quaint, Le Petit Cafe represents the fantastic discoveries that await those brave enough to stray slightly from the beaten track of Coogee's main drag.
Everyone knows the Coogee stereotype - head to the eastern beaches and be prepared for sunburnt English people and Eastern European backpackers, both in alarmingly copious supply. But then, the people who perpetuate these stereotypes have probably never been to this cafe.
From its obviously Gallic moniker to its menus printed on French-ruled paper and kitsch red- and white-chequered napkins that line its croissant baskets, everything about Le Petit is a testament to the institution that is the French cafe. The fare is classic Parisian bistro, with a diverse selection of crepes providing the bulk of the menu options. Friday nights see this place kick up its heels and singlehandedly wrench the fondue and raclette from 1970s kitsch into the present with a selection of traditional cured meats, cheese and warm potatoes; however, with the already overwhelming popularity of this new cafe, expect to see more nights creeping into its regular trading hours.
