Lawson Grove Shop is surrounded by old-school studios and one-bedroom apartments (of the very lovely, high-brow South Yarra variety). It's these single dwellers who hope higher than anyone else that the Grove's kitchen has prepared its sought-after green chicken curry for a quick take-home dinner after work. While there are loads of takeaway options that appeal to lazy cooks, you will be resisting temptation to the utmost if you can bring yourself to walk away from the shop without staying a while. Lawson Grove Shop is simply charming. It's nestled in one of South Yarra's narrow, leafy side streets and if there aren't any tables spare out front you can soak up the breezy ambience inside in the cool. A large communal table that could seat a dozen dominates the back of the room alongside a much meeker, thinner bar with a few stools. Stacked in the middle of the room are a few well-chosen groceries, many of which are imported. There's Italian pasta sauce, French green lentils and Australian olives. Ripe tomatoes in crates, potatoes layered in fresh dirt on hessian bags and other youthful produce are sure to steal your attention if you can take your eyes off the oven-baked goodies and Phillipa's wholesome bread on display.

Eggs as they come
Upon recommendation of a friend we squeezed our way down Lawson Grove to kick start Sunday. Upon requesting 'firm' poached eggs my partner was flicked away with a terse "the Eggs are as they come on the menu" ... so scrambled eggs were settled on (at least these will be firm and cooked), but no the eggs cam 1/2 cooked and running off the 1 slice of toast. I went for the addition of bacon on the side, i was a little surprised to get only 1 rasher ($3.50) & to be honest i've eaten better bacon for less. The buzz of the place and shared table were great, however this was let down by the rude staff (not just behind the counter)and average food. Not being from Melbourne, maybe this is the norm for Sth Yarra.
