Why go out to a restaurant to cook your own dinner? Well, when it involves a slab of volcanic rock heated to a scorching 400 degrees and a delicious array of fresh ingredients, it becomes a much more attractive proposition. All fat is trimmed off the meat, no oil is added and the stonegrill seals in all the natural juices, nutrients and flavours. Owner Mike Gow confidently claims their prime cut of beef to be the best-tasting steak ever, but you may be tempted by the more adventurous bush tucker combo - a feast of camel and kangaroo fillet, venison cutlet and a crocodile kebab served with plum dipping sauce. That said, the stone cooks fish and vegetables beautifully too. Put it to the test by ordering the vegetarian combo (haloumi cheese, mushrooms, eggplant, zucchini, asparagus and baby corn) or the seafood (swordfish, tiger prawns, scallops and squid). Of course, with all the sizzling, chatter and funky jazzy sounds it's never a quiet affair, but that's the beauty of it. It's like having a mini-barbecue indoors - you can sit and relax with a drink in one hand and a pair of tongs in the other, enjoying good company and great food.

not as good as it seems
What was supposed to be a happy birthday celebration for my girlfriend, turned out quite unpleasant. We had to wait over an hour before our main dish was served, and while one of the staff promised to have our entre dish cancelled due to the long wait, the cashier did not agree with this and thus did not proceed with it (i.e. we did not get the discount we were promised). Furthermore, the same cashier only gave us 30$ instead of the 35$ discount we were entitled to with the Entertainment card. Foodwise, the meat was fresh, however, the serving portion is a little small and ventilation of the restaurant was not good with the place becoming so smoky that staff had to open the doors causing it to be quite cold in the restaurant itself.

Lots of fun
We went here for my partners birthday with our friends and everyone had something different and all of it was great tasting and well presented. We where given simple instructions on how to cook our food on the rock and it was great fun. they have a vegetarian meal that was cooked on the stone which was surprising but also very good. The meal that we didnt have to cook on the stone was yummy and entree where very big (2 plates for 6 people)

Clean, inviting, a perfect spot for a relaxed dinner offering novelty value. When the food is still raw when placed in front of you there can be no hiding the quality and Lava offered first-rate quality. Not really for the intimate dinner but well worth a try.
