From the family who brought us the upmarket Flower Drum comes this more down-market sibling - the two eateries neatly book-ending the Melbourne restaurant spectrum. In a slick space of glossy timber, dark tones and industrial-flavoured exposed pipes, the restaurant is modest only by comparison with its elegant sibling. The menu is classic Cantonese, featuring a sparse selection of around 20 items. The options are simple, ranging from lamb spring rolls to bean curd with minced pork, but carry the promising weight of the Flower Drum pedigree. Subsequently, in order to guarantee a table, it is necessary to plan in advance and get your name into their increasingly crammed reservations book.

Just right
My wife and I dropped in for lunch on a cool february day. It was an extremely satisfying meal. We had the scallop and prawn dumplings which were just right without being soggy or sticky. This was followed by some rice and chicken with chestnuts. Again crisp and smooth tastes. We will be going again!!

Very nice night
Our first time at Lau's was a great success. Our first choice of mains had sold out so we went with beef brisket which was delicious, obviously slow cooked in its own juices. A simple dish that tasted like Mama had made it specially for us. The vegies that came as a side dish were also perfect, fresh, crisp and green. Our waitress was perfect. Attentive, friendly and efficient without being too familiar, The wine was good by the glass and fairly priced. The lighting was a little hard and the deco seating is about mid-way between your ordinary Chinese eatery and the high-class joints. We are coming again.

Overrated....?
After reading the massive amount of reviews that Lau's has gotten from many different sources - I was dying to head down to Lau's for a hearty Chinese meal.
Yet, when I opened up the menu, I was a little disappointed to how small range the menu was. Food that was served up was a little bland and presentation did not look appetizing at all. I had expected alot more from them after all it is opened by the son of Flowerdrum.
Food was seriously overpriced and tasted just like any other restaurant that you could have found on the streets in Chinatown.

Only one criticism!
I can't get in every time I want eat there! This restaurant is one of my all time favourites. Never had a bad meal and service never drops below excellent. Food is always fresh and prepared perfectly. I actually have never opened the menu - I just tell the waiter to order for me. If you are there for the first sitting then be prepared to leave on time for the following full house - there are just too many people who want to enjoy this lively venue. It's a family business and one definitely feels welcomed on arrival. Perhaps I should have written a bad review so I can always get in on demand!!

a goer!!
I took my wife here for lunch as it was a special occasion.I have not been to the Flower Drum but after eating here I must go soon. I started with the Shui Mai and the three pieces were excellent. My wife had the vegetarian won ton soup and this was also very good.I chose wrong on the mains though. Not that my main was no good-completely the opposite.I had the prawns and they were so fresh they could have hopped off the plate and walked back into the sea..there were plenty of them as well!!However my wife's meal was the pick..Eye Fillet pan fried..it was easily the most mouth watering piece of steak iv'e ever eaten, so soft it melted in your mouth. One small thing they didn't have was a coffee machine (at least I didnt see one)as desert would have been had if coffee was available. Also the wine list needs to have a few more wines by the glass. Apart from that if you are looking for great food and service do not walk past the front door. It's a beauty!!

Superb!
I had heard that Lau's was related to the Flower Drum and they certainly lived up to their 'ancestor.' The service was exceptional. Staff were extremely attentive, helpful and professional. The food was of perfect proportion, fresh and tasty. They timed everything perfectly and ensured that our glasses were never empty. I honestly could not fault our dining experience.

Amazing value
I went to Lau's recently with a group of 8 people & decided that it would be best to order a lot of dishes so that we could try as much of the menu as possible. So we ordered 9 different dishes. What followed was a little unexpected. We were served each dish as its own course and we found ourselves in the midst of a degustation. Each course portioned out individually. The food was as good as I've had outside the Flower Drum, the service was flawless, the atmosphere was great all on a wintery Monday night.

Rushed out the door
We arrived at Lau's excited by great reviews. We were welcomed to the table, drinks were prompt, entrees were excellent especially the scallop dumplings, but then everything started to slide. I was sure when I booked that we had from 6.15 until 8.30pm for our dinner, but they were in such a rush to get us out the door by 8pm. We literally had plates whipped out from under us while we were still bringing the chopsticks to our mouth, and my partner had a rather expensive glass of beverage removed while at the toilet and disposed of while there was still a good inch left in the glass - not impressed at $48 a bottle.

luncheon at Lau's Kitchen today was ab fab ... ie absolutely delicious - apparently / obviously all you need to do is just brief the staff on favourites and leave it up to them to bring you a selection of dishes which complement each after each after each etc. Compliments to the Chef and also to the Staff and thank you for a delicious treat

Lovely Lau's
Had heard good things about Lou's and we weren't dissapointed. Very attentive service and accomodating staff. The food was good but I did find the menu a little limited. It may be due to the 2 sitting arrangements they had that evening.
Will eat there again and recommend.
