The Chairman and Yip is a Canberra institution, so those fond of the fare at the Chairman should jump for joy with news that the owners behind it created another Canberra noshery: Lanterne Rooms.
Decked out in dark wood and dressed up like a traditional Malaysian kampong, lovers of Indian and Chinese cuisine receive a welcome treat with the restaurant's Nyonya-style cooking. Native Malaysian chef Jeffrey Shim offers delicious South-East Asian dishes such as oysters served with coriander, lime, shavings of green apples and pickled radish or the delightfully-decadent roast pork served with dark soy and ginger Shanghai rice cakes.

A delight
I had read the other reviews so that I could find a nice place for my wife's birthday. I had a party of five people. The restaurant is dark and cosy and intimate. The food simply delicious with many flavours. The service friendly and professional The prices were reasonable. Overall a great night out, we will be back and I have earmarked as one of my favourites. I have recommended to many people

Lantern Rooms has won us over
This is a great restaurant that has us returning again and again, thanks to an interesting & moorish menu, comfortable, innovative decor & terrific hosts & staff. As someone with a few special dietary issues, I am always happily catered for at both lunch & dinner times here - many menu items are already gluten-free and the staff are knowledgeable & happy to adjust to suit any dietary need. These guys really know their business, that of making happy, loyal diners who keep coming back. (Their little sister "Phat Duck", in the city mall, is fab for cheap eats at lunchtimes too.)

Fantastic - what a find!
We have eaten in this restaurant twice now and both times the food has been amazing and the service exemplary. The chef was happy to tailor the banquet menu to suit my friend's requests and the warm welcome makes eating here a real joy.
