Tucked away in the leafy enclave of Cottesloe, super-chef Kate Lamont's sparkling new venture grooves big-time. The theme is 'enoteca', an Italian expression that describes a cosy hub for wine and nibbles or, to be literal about it, a 'wine library'.
From A to Z, there are around 250 local, national and international wines that are offered on a rotating basis, and patrons are encouraged to sip before they commit by a select team of personable and knowledgeable sommeliers. Such is the team's love and level of commitment to their wine stock that an all-year-round ambient temperature of 17-21C is maintained throughout the store, the optimal environment for wines.
Food is limited to grazing via a contemporary Australian menu of tapas fare, ranging from saffron chips to an outstanding marron gently kissed by a pepper-and-garlic dust. For dessert it's impossible to pass up the Paris-imported macaroons, which shimmer on their plate like colourful jewels.
The clientele is sky-highbrow, cashed up and pashima-clad, and evening black is de rigueur. If preferred, a private room provides for some quietude away from the well-heeled throng and is ideal for intimate tastings, degustation or some good old people-perving.

pretty disappointing.
being a huge fan of lamont's in margaret river, i was looking forward to trying their cottesloe wine store/tapas bar. unfortunately, it was an experience i'd rather forget.
The 2 tapas plates we ordered together arrived 20min apart. we were also wrongly delivered the neighbouring table's order. the tables along the back wall were so close together that JJ's posterior nearly knocked over my wine glass when he reached for a bottle from the rack! i would like to say it got better, but it didn't: we waited 25 minutes for our plates to be cleared, and then another full hour for our mains. it just wasn't acceptable. the people next to us asked if they had any staff off sick, but no, they were apparently fully staffed. upon getting up to pay for our bill, we waited 5 minutes at an unattended front desk, with no attention whatsoever from anyone, despite the waitress walking past several times and seeing us. it was only when another large table decided to leave and 8 people were crowded around the unattended reception that finally someone came along. i would like to say we were given an apology, or a "we'll be with you in a moment", but we were ignored in favour of the larger party and left to stand there a little longer. our fellow diners [who were just there for wine] said to us, "hope the food was worth it!" well, the food was delicious - the toasted ciabatta with haloumi and cherry tomatoes was the perfect balance of sweet, crunchy, and salty, and the salt and pepper squid on sechuan eggplant was crisp and tender, despite the lemon wedge being withered and dry and obviously cut long ago. the ningaloo sirloin was juicy, and the sage encrusted chicken was crisp-crumbed with a great little salad of feta, rocket and pumpkin beneath, making a nice little dish despite the sage being in hiding. also, it goes without saying that of course the wine was wonderful. overall though, i am sorry to say that the service [or total lack of] ruined our night, and the good food couldn't make up for all the other negatives. we will not be returning to this venue again.

fabulous food
We had the tapas on a lazy sunday and the food was to die for...standout dishes for me were the lovely delicate blue swimmer crab on a crushed pea base, and the seared ocean trout...absolutely delicious..my partner loved the chicken bisteeya which was an interesting mixture of flavours and the squid.

Tapas with panache
I went here with a friend on a Sunday lunch: Pink champagne, baguette/evo $2.50pp and 3 tapas, all around $12 - $15 each: Duck parfait with onion jam & thin toast/Roast tomato, goats curd, broad bean salad / Saffron tempura whiting with fennel and dressing. Drooling already? You should be. The flavours were TDF, beautifully presented and reasonably priced. All to quite v.smooth background music. Bliss.
