La Tana

Venice may be sinking, but the only saturating action that goes on at this Venetian wine bar and restaurant in Surry Hills is the sinking down of delicious Italian wines and aperitifs. To be specific, La Tana's main beverage of choice is the Spritz, an effervescent northern Italian wine-based cocktail served as an aperitif with snacks. The menu changes daily so you never know just what you're going to get, but you can be guaranteed a refreshingly homely Italian-styled meal that's perfectly matched to the La Tana liquids.

La Tana - Cleveland St Redfern
I went to La Tana after a glowing review in the Sydney Magazine May 2010 edition. The menu looked good, however, a few things made it more of a mediocre experience. Firstly it took quite a while for our order to be taken. There was one waiter with an assistant that delivered drinks and cleared plates only. What seemed strange were the two standing behind the counter chatting away to each other without even blinking an eyelid as to whether their colleague needed some help.

Despite this, the flow of service was quite good, friendly and professional. Two things about the food dented my experience. I ordered the duck and artichoke skewers with sweet aioli sauce, sounded great on the menu. However, what arrived was 4 skewers of meat with canned/pickled artichokes and a quite tasty aioli. After a few bites I realised we had been served lamb and artichoke skewers, not duck.

I asked the floor assistant if it was supposed to be duck and he nudged and said the main waiter would be over in a moment. The waiter never arrived. Whilst the lamb was quite edible, I feel paying $24 for 4 skewers of lamb and canned artichokes was not good enough. Second issue was the house-made fusilli pasta with slow-roasted beef cheeks. The pasta was perfect and the sauce also, but, there were 3 huge pieces of fat in place of actual beef.

Not enough attention to detail and again for $26 for pasta, I would've expected more. It is situated on the noisy corner of Cleveland and Bourke Sts Surry Hills, yet the staff insisted on having the doors and windows open? My recommendation is, if you still want to try it get a table at the back and be careful what you choose to eat.
