For more than 30 years the locals of Griffith have got their Italian fill at La Scala, a traditional cafe/restaurant found along Banna Avenue. Renato Vico is the owner and chef, heading a friendly team of staff, while brother Robert Vico is renowned for spinning quite the pizza.

A treat
It had been suggested to me that this establishment was the best Italian restaurant in Griffith. I was warned that it was a bit "Underbelly-ish" and in many respects I can see what they mean (quite apart from the fact that Robert Trimbole apparently ate here "all the time"). I don't think the decor has probably changed since those days - but that doesn't detract from the overall experience at all.
The night I was there was a Wednesday night and unbelievably busy! But despite this, the wait staff were extremely attentive, happy and accommodating.
The food was sensational. The gorgonzola gnocchi had been recommended to me and I ordered it (despite not being a huge gnocchi fan) and it was delightful. It was obviously freshly hand made...it was just so light and delicate (not rubbery and squash ball like) and the sauce was a dream - not at all overpowering.
The wine was great (and rather inexpensive) and the kahlua cheesecake to die for.
I recommend this place highly and look forward to a return visit when next I am in Griffith.
