La Rustica is a true family affair, with all the rellies pitching in to serve up Oz-influenced interpretations of authentic Italian cuisine. The family is originally from the Calabrian coast of Italy and has been operating this Kingston trattoria since 1990. In that time, they have developed a solid fan base of customers, who come back for such dishes as the veal carpaccio or the house-made gnocchi. There are plenty of pizzas available, from simple classics such as a margherita or a potato, rosemary and olive oil pizza; to a ham and pineapple pizza, in a nod to the new world.

crash eating
With so many kids seemingly all the time, it almost feel like a fast food place. But after you finish waiting for most things, it's obvious that it isn't even that. The food is large and clumsy with no real flare for the food being shown off. I'd rather bang about my own kitchen than have average stuff at these prices. They do try to keep things going with service, but it just wasn't enough.

Decent food
The food is decent, and the service is mostly good too. Can be very noisy at times and they seem to squish a lot of people into the place making it hard to sometimes get in and out of your chair.

no reason to return
This place is odd. They have a lot of customers which normally means good quality stuff to be had. But what I saw and what I had was awful. Kids ran around unchecked, staff didn't pay attention to my table or any around me and the food was below par. They try to make up for poor quality with quantity. But who wants to finish a large portion of bad food? To rub it in, the prices are a bit steep too.

Family restaurant
The setting was rustic and quirky like the name. Broken plates plastered into the walls and big copper wall under the kitchen window.
Food was in large portions and simple. Pasta, steak and quail were great. The pizza's were suprisingly average. The seafood risotto was terrible. Bland, watery, poor seafood and the rice slid off the plate easily.
Service from the floor staff (waitresses) was great. Very friendly and top service. The bar staff seemed like they didn't want to be there and were not friendly.
It was so noisy for our dinner party we had to shout to communicate. Yet the restaurant was half empty. All the large parties had their tables crammed at the back. Poor layout and seating of parties.
Great family restaurant, for kids and all.
Not for fine dinning or a classy crowd.

Top Canberra Spot
Came in for a birthday dinner and was stoked with my meal. Lovely, friendly service. Always on the look out for a customer needing assistance. Meals were fantastic value for money. Really top quality tucker. I'll be coming back soon, with a much larger group hopefully.

Why?
This place seems to have a constant stream of people. Are they all as disappointed as me? The food was in large portions, I'll give them that, it's just that I didn't want to finish it. The steak was over done and in a sauce meant for cheap seafood, not red meat. The pasta was soggy, and without the taste that I've learnt Italians to be proud of and their wine list may as well have Passion Pop on it. I didn't try the pizza which I've heard to be okay.

Pizzas and pasta to melt you away
This place is one of a kind. It is located in one of Canberra's hot spots and has an atmosphere that would suit anyone. The pastas are incredible, not to mention the homemade gnocchi and ravioli, and the pizzas are big and very tasty! I would recommend this restaurant to families or large groups looking for a great night out with delicious food!
