La Niche Cafe

La Niche is a refreshing French cafe that proudly does away with the usual 'bonjour' salutations and faux pretension often found in European-style eateries. That's not to say that service is unfriendly - in fact the vibe is cosy village chic with rustic open bluestone walls, redbrick fireplaces and curvy painted mirrors in a set-up reminiscent of owner Antony's previous cafe on the historic streets of Paris.

The wine list of 14 varieties of French and Australian wine, as well as beer and spirits, is a great complement to dishes such as blue cheese salad, goat cheese salad, toasted baguette sandwiches and home-made soup specials. A spacious upstairs lounge area doubles as an artistic display space where artists exhibit and locals gather to catch up over coffee and dine on freshly baked croissants, moist muffins and big crumbly cookies which are freshly prepared by chef, Eddy, each day.

Lunch here is great, very friendly 'French' atmosphere, good food (though limited to salads, baguettes and pizzas). Must have is the goats cheese salad with proscuitto. Drinks good, disappointed no orangina, but makes up with San Pellegrino. Choice selection of wines. Standout though is the homemade hot chocolate with spice. Perfect amount of dark colour and bitterness and doesn't have that overbearing frothy hot milk. All in all a very satisfying lunch.
