Steak and more
I have been to lunch at La Grillade several times over the years and treat it as much as a great steak meal as I do an opportunity to gaze on the captains of the media industry who frequent the place. It's always a long lunch when you go to La Grillade; a hefty steak doesn't inspire you to get back to work in a hurry and there are plenty of good wines to choose from to help delay the return. Yesterday the steaks were great, mind you for more than $40 a steak you'd expect them to be, and the side dish of field mushrooms was sensational. It is hard to know what you're going to get though when it comes to how would you like that cooked. In Sydney "rare" ranges from singed to medium and at La Grillade my medium-rare was what I would have called medium. Maybe it was where we were sitting but it was hard to get anyone to take any notice of us and I found that once the service did arrive, it could only be described as surly. Is that stand-offish, don't-even-try-to-joke with-us attitude part of the restaurant policy? Otherwise great on all counts.

Steak Your Life on it
La Grillade prides itself on its steak - and given that beef comprises half the mains (and one of the starters) it's clear that most of La Grillade's diners are not vegetarian.
So what else could we have on our first visit? I'd recommend having a light starter, and wisely chose the goats' cheese souffle. Delicate and light, it was a good choice.
And so - to the steak. It lived up to the hype: a lovely cut, nicely charred, with crispy chips and green beans. My only change, were I to go again, would be to choose a smaller cut - 320g fills you up, and it would be a travesty not to try pudding! The tasting plate of basically all the desserts was wonderful, but if you only want one, go for the chocolate souffle - trust me on this one.
Perhaps I'm getting old; it seems on re-reading this that if I'm going to have a steak all I can manage on either side is a souffle - but it's worth feeling a little full.
The service was great: our waiter was friendly and attentive, and the owner very helpful in chosing wine by the glass. And for a Wedneday night the room was pleasantly full.
We didn't skimp on the meal - it was a special occasion - and we paid the price, but we both can't wait until we return.
