Oh, Chapel Street. It's one of those places that's created a deep chasm between the good Melburnians of the north and south. Northsiders hate it because everyone looks the same and wears bad clothes. Southsiders love it because everyone wears bad clothes, but no one notices because they all look the same. Still, whether Stevie jeans make you want to recoil from or amorously embrace their wearer, there are some palatable aspects of Chapel Street that must be considered.
For a start, it's the home of La Camera. Meaning "chamber" in Italian, it also translates into a "molto bene" in the food arena, with house-made gnocchi and minestrone crafted to 27-year-old house recipe taking pride of place and efficiently catering to spendthrift's gastronomic needs. You can also take your pick from the chicken breast stuffed with bocconcini; veal rib-eye saltimbocca, or get in touch with your inner green leaf by taking up one of the salad options.
Not wanting to spurn the red decor army that's invaded Melbourne, La Camera does its bit for this curious movement by obliging with red walls and devoting a section of its restaurant to posters that are going to sort out your social life too. It's sort of reminiscent of your prudent student decorations, only with much better food.
Turning 30 in 2009, this place has positioned itself perfectly in the myriad retail delights with its range of feel-good Italian. Just make sure you ask Stevie to stay home next time you head out.
